UNIVERSITY ARITHMETIC.

DEFINITIONS.

1. A single thing, is called one or a unit. A number is a unit, or a collection of units.

2. A single thing of a collection, is called the unit or base of the collection. The primary base of every number is the unit

one.

3. SCIENCE treats of the properties and relations of things: ART is the practical application of the principles of Science.

4. ARITHMETIC treats of numbers. It is a science when it determines the properties and relations of numbers; and an art, when it applies principles of science to practical purposes.

5. A PROPOSITION is something to be done, or demonstrated. 6. An ANALYSIS is an examination of the separate parts of a proposition.

7. An OPERATION, in Arithmetic, is the act of doing something with numbers. The number obtained by an operation is

called a result, or answer.
