"THE BIBLICAL REPERTORY" was begun in 1825, by the present editor. It was not intended to be original in its general character, but to consist of selections from the writings of the most distin guished scholars." The first four volumes were published on this plain. In 1829, from which the present series dates, Dr. Hodge associated with himself several gentlemen who resided in Princeton and its neighbourhood, and from thenceforward it appeared as a Review, "embracing in its plan the whole range of theological and religious subjects." The title Princeton Review was not added till 1837, but it has continued under nearly the same editorial superintendence for forty years, and sustained an honourable reputation for learning and ability both in Europe and America.
