men, but of God: That is, faith Paul, in the kingdom of Chrift, where all things are spiritual, circumcifion in the Spirit puts an end to circumcifion in the flesh; and in the fame kingdom of Chrift faith Peter, baptifm in the Spirit puts an end to baptifm in the flesh; for he is not a chriftian who is one outwardly, neither is that baptifm which is outward in the flesh, but he is a chriftian who is one inwardly, and baptism is that of the heart in the Spirit, and not in the letter, whofe praife, alfo, is not of men, but of God. For under the gofpel, which is the miniftration of the Spirit (as ye have been oft minded) we can find nothing among all outward things, through the use and exercise whereof we may attain the cleanness and purity of righteoufnefs in our natures; and therefore Christ hath put an end to all outward, carnal, and earthly things of the first Testament, by the inward, fpiritual, and heavenly things of a fecond and better Teftament: And by his own death and refurrection only, not without us, but within us, through the power and efficacy of his Spirit, all the baptifm of the New-Teftament is fully and perfectly performed.

And thus in all these particulars you fee the infinite excellency and glory of the Spirit-baptifm above water-baptism, and this only is fufficient in the days of the gospel, as being the true and proper baptifm of the New-Teitament: For as Chrift himself only is fufficient to the faithful without John, though John were of ufe in his season to point out Chrift; fo the baptifm of Chrift only is fufficient to the faithful without the baptifm of John, though the baptifm of John were of ufe in its feafon, to point out the baptifm of Chrift; and the baptift himself was of this judgment, who faid to Christ, I have need to be baptized of thee, which he means not of water-baptism (for fo Chrift himself, as you have heard, did not baptize) but of the baptifin of the Spirit; and fo the Baptift himself,

who

who was never baptized with water, neither by Christ nor the Apostles, nor any. body elfe, yet was baptized with the Spirit, and the baptifm of the Spirit was fufficient for the baptift, without any water-baptifm; and fo Chrift's Spirit-baptifm by the word, is fufficient for all the faithful now, without John's water-baptifm; for he that is truly washed from all filthinefs of flesh and Spirit, and hath the Holy Ghost in him to renew his nature, and to conform him exactly to Chrift's own image, and to work him in this prefent world into the true fimilitude of heaven, and to be in him a fountain of water fpringing up unto everlasting life, what need hath he of cold material water to be poured on his body, under the pretence of any fign whatever, either of Mofes or John, when-as, he hath the truth, substance, and heavenly thing itself?

Now this, it may be, may seem strange and dangerous to fome of low, and fleshly, and customary religion; but let all fuch (if it be poffible) confider, that where the substance comes, the fhadow is at an end, and the ceremony where the truth comes, and the creature where God comes: And if they understand not this for the prefent, I hope they may understand it afterwards; for we fpeak not at uncertainties in this point, what we have in fome measure seen, and felt, and handled of the word of life, that we deliver to you, that ye may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and his Son Jefus Chrift through the Spirit.

Ifaiah lviii. 12.

And they that shall be of thee (that is, of the church that is born of the Spirit) fhall build the old waste places, (made fuch by the church that is born of the flesh) thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations (by the clear revealing of Christ, his kingdom and all his things, according to the miniftration of the Spirit) and thou shalt be called the Repairer of the breach, the Reftorer of paths to dwell in. (Here Chrift writes upon the forementioned church his own new name.)

Wherein, among other things, is declared, that the Universities (according to their prefent Statutes and Practices) are not (as he affirmed) answerable to the Schools of the Prophets in the time of the Law; but rather to the Idolatrous High Places.

And that Human Learning, is not a Preparation appointed by Christ, either for the right understanding, or right teaching the Gospel. With a brief Testimony against Divinity-Degrees in the Universities.

As alfo LUTHER'S Testimony at large upon the whole matter. And lastly, The right Reformation of Learning, Schools, and Univerfities, according to the State of the Gofpel, and the Light that fhines therein.
