LESSON 1.

Select Sentences from Scripture.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not kill. Be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long. They that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing. Great peace have they which love thy law. Seek ye the Lord, while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near. Your heart shall live that seek God. The hand of our God is upon all them that seek him. O taste and see that the Lord is good. Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober and hope to the end. Be of one mind, live in peace, and the God of love and peace shall be with you. Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live. Let us lift up our hearts with our hands unto God. I know not the day of my death. Thou hast made me as the clay, and wilt thou bring me into dust again? All go unto one place; all are of the dust. I shall go the way whence I shall not return. As for man, his days are as grass. The Lord has done great things for us. The Lord's name is a strong tower. He is good unto them that wait for him: to the soul that seeketh him. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. Trust in the Lord, and it shall be well with thee. Know ye that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

LESSON 2.

Invitation to the Paths of Wisdom.

My son, forget not my law. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart. Fear the Lord, and depart from evil. Happy is the man that findeth wisdom. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: so shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. When thou liest down thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. Get wisdom-forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep· thee.. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour when thou dost embrace her. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest thou shalt not stumble. My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. I, Wisdom, dwell with prudence. Wise men lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

The Sluggard.

As the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed; he hideth his hand in his bosom, it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. The sluggard will not plough by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing. The desire of the slothful killeth him, for his hands refuse to labour. The way of the slothful man is an hedge of thorns. The slothful man saith there is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets. He also that is slothful in his work, is brother to him that is a great waster. Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. How long wilt thou sleep, O slug gard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep.

LESSON 4..

Obedience to Parents.

Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Ye shall fear every man his father and his mother, I am the Lord your God. Hearken unto thy father that begat thee; and despise not thy mother when she is old. Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour

the face of the old man, and fear thy God. Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right: Honour thy father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise, that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. Children obey your parents in all, things, for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

LESSON 5.

On Lying.

Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour. A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue. Thou shalt not bear false witness. The getting of treasures by a lying tongue, is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death. Put away lying, and speak every man truth to his neighbour. Lie not one to another, seeing ye have put off the old man with his deeds. Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth. A good man, out of the good treasure of the heart, bringeth forth good things; and an evil man, out of the evil treasure, bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy

lips from speaking guile. Blessed is the man that maketh the Lord his trust; and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: buť the lips of the wise shall preserve them. What

man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. The tongue of the just is as choice silver. He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life. All liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone. A righteous man hateth lying; but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

LESSON 6.
Industry.

The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much; but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep. Seest thou a man diligent in his business, he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men. He that diligently seeketh good, procureth favour. In all labour there is profit; and the labour of the righteous tendeth to life. The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness. Six days shalt thou labour and do all thy work. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither
