wavering. And this is the confidence that we have in him, that if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us. Pray without ceasing. Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.

LESSON 11.

Government of the Tongue.

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold, also, the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm. Even so the tongue is a little meniber and boasteth great things. He that keepeth his mouth, keepeth his life; but he that openeth wide his lips, shall have destruction. In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin; but he that refraineth his lips is wise. The mouth *of fools feedeth on foolishness. He that hath knowledge spareth his words. Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise, and he that shutteth his lips is a man of understanding. Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue, keepeth his soul from troubles. Therewith bless we God even the Father; and therewith curse we men which are made after

the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Keep thy tongue from evil and thy lips from speaking guile. Let all bitterness, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you with all malice. Speak evil of no man. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth.

LESSON 12.

Honesty.

Thou shalt not steal. Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another. Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him. A false balance is an abomination to the Lord; but a just weight is his delight. Divers weights and divers measures, both of them are alike abominations to the Lord. Thou shalt not have in thy bags divers weights. Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures; a great and a small. But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight; a perfect and just measure shalt thou have; for all that do unrighteously are an abomination unto the Lord thy God. And if thou sell aught unto thy neighbour, or buyest aught of thy neighbour, ye shall not oppress one another. Better is a little with righteousness, than great revenues

without right. Whoso is a partner with a thief hateth his own soul. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace. The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another. Do no evil, but do that which is honest. Render, therefore, to all their dues; follow after righteousness. Thus saith the Lord, keep ye judgment, and do justice, for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. Blessed is the

man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it. Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways though he be rich.

LESSON 13.

Humility.

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. God resisteth the proud and giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every one the measure of faith. Be not wise in your own coneeits. Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly; but the proud he

knoweth afar off. Better is it to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. When pride cometh, then cometh shame, but with the lowly is wisdom. By humility, and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. The Lord raiseth them that are bowed down: he healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. The Lord lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground. He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. Thus saith the High and Lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place; with him also that is of an humble and contrite spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Wo unto those that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent into their own sight.

LESSON 14.

Love.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these

two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. These things I command you, that ye love one another. Love your enemies; do good to them which hate you; bless them that curse you; and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? Let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed, and in truth. God is love, and he that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God, and God in him. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. He that loveth not, knoweth not God: for God is love. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. This is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. Let brotherly love continue. Let love be without dissimulation; be kindly affectioned one to another, in honour preferring one another.

As

we have opportunity, let us do good unto all men. Finally, brethren, farewell; be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind; live in peace, and the God of love and peace shall be with you,

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.-Heb. xi. 6.
