68. To find how often one compound quantity contains another of the same kind.

RULE.-Reduce both to the same denomination, then divide as in Simple Division.

Ex. 1. Divide £1 11s. 6d. by 1s. 9d.?

Here 1s. 9d. 21d.; and £1 11s. 6d. 378d.; then 378÷21 =18 Ans.

Ex. 2. Divide 79cwt. 2qr. 26lb. by 3qr. 10lb.?

RULE.-Point off so many places to the right as there are cyphers in the divisor.

RULE.-First divide by 8, &c., then divide by the other factor,

13. Pure gold is 19 times heavier than water, what is the weight of a cubic foot of gold, a cubic foot of water weighing 1000 ounces? Ans. 10cwt. 2qr. 271b. 2oz.

14. How much is gained by purchasing a quantity of oats for £113 10s. 10d., and selling the same at £170 7s. 44d.? Ans. £56 16s. 5d.

15. How many horses can be bought for £3347 13s. 4d., at £27 13s. 4d. each ? Ans. 121 horses.

16. A merchant bought cloth to the amount of £61 8s. 6d. for 1s. 7 d. per yard, how many yards had he? Ans 756yd.

17. What tax could London pay, each person paying one farthing, the population being 2332116? Ans. £2429 5s. 9d.

18. How much ground is occupied by the foot-path in Sackville-street, Dublin, the breadth of the walk being 16ft, and the length of the street, of an English mile?

19. A prudent boy saves 94d. per week from the age of 13, how much will he have saved when he comes to the age of 30? Ans. £35 2s. 2 d.

20. Another boy saves d. per day from the age of 10; what will be his age when he has saved £100? Ans. 97yr. 31wk. 4dy.

21. How much money will give 74d. to each boy, at Christmas, in a school of 115 boys? Ans. £3 11s. 10d.

22 Two labourers have each 7s. 9d. per week: one saves 10 d. every fortnight; the other goes 44d. in debt every week. How much should the one be richer than the other in 10 years? Ans. £21 2s. 6d.

23. A sum of £154 10s. is to be divided among 12 girls and 10 women, in such a way that for every shilling a girl will get, a woman will get 1s. 6d. What is the share of each?

Ans. A woman, £8 11s. 8d.; a girl, £5 14s. 5μd.

24. How many dollars in £30 2s. 3d., at 4s. 1d. per dollar? Ans. 146 dollars.

25. Bought 20lb. of butter, at 6d. per lb., at what price must the whole be sold to gain 3s. 9d.? Ans. 13s. 9d.

26. A quantity of cloth, containing 1031yd. 2qr. 2nl. is to be divided among 131 persons: how much will each get? Ans. 7yd. 3qr. 2nl.

27. From 347tn. 13cwt. 2qr. 231b. take 39tn. 15cwt. 3qr. 25lb. and divide the remainder by 56? Ans. 5tn. 9cwt. 3qr. 23lb.+26.

28. If a person having an annual income of £114 11s. 6d. spend 19s. 6d. per week, how much can he save each day?

Ans, 3s. 6d.

29. What will be the cost of 16cwt. 1qr. of potatoes, at 14s. the barrel of 20 stone? Ans. £4 11s.

30. What yearly income would enable a person to spend 4s. 6d. a day, and save £2 6s. 5d. per month? Ans. £110 5s.

31. What is the salary of a person whose £17 10s., at 14d. in the pound?

32. Allowing the cubit 21 inches, how many perches long was the Ark, which was 300 cubits?

33. How many shirts can be made out of 60 ells of linen, allowing 3 yd. for each shirt?

35. A person buys 60 cows, and sells them after 3 months for an advance of £3 16s. 8d. per cow: how much does he gain, a month's expenses being £37? Ans. £119.

36. What quantity of linen-yard wide-will line 25 yards of cloth, ell wide? Ans. 31 yards.

37. I bought 4 sacks of potatoes, 135 stones in all, how much did I pay at 15s. 6d. the barrel of 20 stones? Ans. £5 4s. 71⁄2d.

38. A gentleman wishes to plant la. 2r. 10p. with trees, how many will he require, at 2 trees to the square yard?

Ans. 37811.

39. How much loaf sugar, at 8d. per pound, is equal in value to 30 stone of moist sugar, at 7s. 10d. per stone?

Ans. 25st. 21lb.

40. In the north of Ireland, 161b. is allowed to every stone of flax, what will be the price of a horse-load of flax, at 4s. 6d per stone, the horse drawing a ton? Ans. £31 10s.

41. About 100 cubic inches of air weigh 31gr., how many cubic feet will weigh a pound? Ans. 103 (about).

42. About 20st. of potatoes will seed 30 perches of ground: what will be the cost of the seed for 3 acres, at 64d. per stone? Ans. £8 13s. 4d.
