THE intention of the Author, in compiling the present Treatise, was to give to the public a simple and comprehensive SCHOOL ARITHMETIC, divested of all unnecessary technicalities. The Rules have been formed with a view to simplification. Useless theories and prolix elucidations have been avoided, and concise rules used instead. The Examples given have not only been selected on the progressive principle, suitable to the proficiency of the learner, but will be found peculiarly adapted to exercise the judgment, and ensure a perfect knowledge of the subject. A number of useful Exercises, to be performed mentally, is introduced after each chapter of the ordinary kind, thus giving to MENTAL ARITHMETIC, for the first time, its proper place, considering its importance and acknowledged utility. On this subject alone there are upwards of five hundred and fifty Exercises carefully arranged under twenty appropriate rules. In the APPENDIX a number of Notes have been given and also Hints on the improved method of teaching Arithmetic, which cannot fail to be of the utmost importance to Teachers, but in particular to Female Teachers, Governesses, &c., who may not have had the advantage of a regular course of instruction in this. indispensable branch of education.
