N the following Pages I have delivered the Rules in as brief and concife a manner as I possibly could, so as to make them general, and in order to render thofe Rules more eafy and familiar, have work'd most of the Examples at full length. I need not, (I prefume) fay any thing concerning the utility of, and advantages that accrue to mankind in general from Arithmetic, fince they are by this time pretty well known, and alfo deferve the employment of a much better Pen than mine, but I will venture to fay, (and I hope you will pardon me for it) that the Rules laid down in this Book, will upon trial, be found at once fufficient to qualify any Perfon for Business, which was my greatest inducement for writing it.. I pretend not to boast of new difcoveries of my own, neither do I file my felf the Author of this TREATISE, I can call it no more than a Collection from the Works of Mers. SADLEr. VYSE, DILWORTH, Mayoh, LeadBETER, FISHER, HILL, SHARP, &c. &c. In order to make this Book as ufefid as poffible, I have added Jeveral Examples of the different Forms of Acquittances, Promiflory Notes, Bills of Parcels, and Book Debts, Foreign and Inland Bills of Exchange, Letters of Credit, and Advice, &c. &c. and as to the order of the Rules in this TREA TISE, I have placed them as I thought most properly they should be learn'd, but every Mafter may use his own pleasure, and place the Rules in his own order. Ifhould be ungrateful, if I did not own my felf obliged to the Gentlemen whose names are expressed above, tho I have made many alterations by working the Examples different ways and at full length, and to most of the Examples that are borrowed, I have wrote the name of the real Author, as every one will confefs that every Author ought to shine in his own Plumes. And in nany Questions where I could do it conveniently, I have varied them |
