INTRODUCTION. a This work, as completed, is intended for self-instruction in Geometry ; a subject to me, for more than fifty years, of the greatest interest, as combining valuable practical knowledge with continued opportunities for exercising the reasoning powers. It is especially suited for the use, and I trust the pleasure, of a most valuable class of men, the non-commissioned officers of the British army. It is also fitted for a still more valuable class, "the ladies," geometry being a study in which “woman's wit is better than man's wisdom,”—rapidity of perception and ingenuity in application being of so great importance in all the most interesting demonstrations, that I believe a woman might learn more from this work in one week than the average of men would learn in four. Originally I commenced the work as a mere instructional work on plane geometry, under the impression that on a subject in which I felt great pleasure a work might be prepared which might be made interesting, even to schoolboys.
