COMPOUND MULTIPLICATION

Is the multiplying of numbers of different denominations, by a simple figure or figures whose product shall be equal to a proposed number.

I. When the quantity does not exceed 12, multiply the price by the quantity, and the product will be the answer.

II. If the number or quantity exceeds 12, and is to be found in the table, multiply by its component parts.

To multiply by fractional parts, as 1, 2, 3, &c.

RULE. Multiply the price by the upper figure of the fraction, and divide the product by the lower, the quotient will be the answer; but when the upper figure is not more than one, dividing the price or sum by the lower figure gives the answer.

EXAMPLES.

1. What is of a yard of cambric worth, at 12s. 6d. per yard ?

III. When the number does not exceed the table, and it cannot be found in it, find the nearest to it, either less or greater; then, after having found the price of this number, add or subtract the value of so many, as it is less or greater than the giv en number.

EXAMPLES.

1. 37 bushels of corn, at 4s. 11d. per bushel..

When the amount of a ewt. is required at a certain rate perlb. RULE. Find the price of one or two quarters, and multiply the product by the component parts of a cwt.
