SCOTTISH PROVIDENT INSTITUTION. 6, ST. ANDREW SQUARE, EDINBURGH; 18, KING WILLIAM ST., LONDON, E.C. THIS OFFICE alone combines the advantages of Mutual Assurance with moderate premiums. INSTEAD of charging rates admittedly higher than are necessary, and afterwards returning the excess, or a portion of it, in the shape of periodical Bonuses, it gives from the first as large an Assurance as the Premiums will with safety bear-reserving the Whole Surplus for those who live long enough to secure the Common Fund from loss. The PREMIUMS usually charged for £1000 (with Profits) will here, at most ages, assure £1200 to £1250 from the first-the difference being equivalent to an immediate "Bonus" of 20 to 25 per cent. ;-while, by reserving the surplus (instead of sharing it with all indiscriminately) very considerable additions may be expected on the Policies of those who live to participate. ITS TERMS are thus well calculated to meet the requirements of intending Assurers. They are specially adapted to the case of Provisions in Family Settlements, where it is of importance to secure, for the smallest present outlay, a competent provision, of definite amount, in the case of early death. Examples of Annual Premiums for £100 at Death-with Profits. * A Person of 30 may thus secure £1000 at Death, by a yearly payment, DURING LIFE, of £20 155. OR, by TWENTY-ONE yearly, payments of £27 13s. 4d.-being thus free of payment after age 50. At age 40 the Premium, ceasing at age 60, is, for £1000, £33 145. 2d., being about the same as most Offices require to be paid during the whole term of life. AT T last Investigation a Surplus was declared of £376,500, of which £125,000 were reserved, and £251,500 were divided among 4,599 Policies entitled to share. The result was that Policies for £1,000 sharing for the first time were increased to sums varying from £1,170 to £1,300. In some cases Policies which have shared at the whole four divisions that have taken place have now been doubled. The NEW ASSURANCES (entirely Home Business) for several years have exceeded ONE MILLION STERLING. The ACCUMULATED FUNDS (increased last year by £225,000) now exceed £3,300,000. The GROWTH OF THE FUNDS is one of the best practical tests of prosperity. "The RATIO in which, for several years past, our Funds have increased, in proportion to our Income, has greatly exceeded that of any other Office in the Kingdom." Full STATEMENTS of PRINCIPLES will be found in the ANNUAL Reports. EDINBURGH, Nov. 1878. JAMES WATSON, Manager. "Bonne et Belle." And it has not. Thanks to numerous changes in the political world: to the Providential theory of wars and rumours of wars being chiefly intended as a means of teaching geography; but, above all, to the kindness of correspondents, the Almanack has every year presented fresh and interesting features. In the current volume the reader will find that the changes caused by the partial dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire have been recorded, and Cyprus assumes its place as a British possession. Special attention has been paid to India, and to the countries immediately adjacent; and Central Africa being specially attractive to a large number of persons, a chapter has been allotted to that part of the world. Fortunately for this country no event of any moment needed special notice; but all official and other changes that have come under the Editor's notice have been duly made. As heretofore, the Editor is much indebted to Correspondents, and he trusts that readers will continue to "take a note " of any error or shortcoming, and inform him of its existence. He must, however, urge upon those resident abroad that, unless corrections for next year's Almanack reach him before November, little or no use can be made of them. In consequence of delay two or three Colonies in this year's issue remain unrevised. LONDON, 1878.
