GRANULAR ·

EFFERVESCENT CITRATE OF MAGNESIA.

ESTABLISHED 1857.

THIS perfectly white and delicately clean preparation is the most delicious of Spring and Summer Drinks, highly cooling and refreshing, as well as mildly aperient. The action is febrifuge (that is, having a tendency to reduce a feverish state of the body); consequently, when the system is in an uncomfortable, heated, dry condition, a draught of this preparation is most refreshing; it will produce a moisture on the skin, and the frame generally will be invigorated. It does not lower the system like other salines.

Throughout Great Britain, in most of the cities of the United States, and in large towns of our various Colonies, it is very usual for the chief chymists to keep no other "Granular Effervescent Citrate of Magnesia " than "Bishop's.' The reason for this universal preference is that, since its introduction in 1857, it has been found that none of the Imitations of this preparation, originally introduced by Mr. BISHOP, have been able to compare with it in reliability as a medicine, or in purity and freshness of flavour, as a cooling drink. Full directions on each bottle.

Dr. REDWOOD, Professor of Chemistry at the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, thus writes:-"I have examined a great many samples of Mr. Bishop's granulated preparations, obtained at various times and from different sources, and have found them to be very uniform in character, fully charged with Carbonic Acid, and obviously made with great care and accuracy.

An old Correspondent writes :-"I have never found your Citrate of Magnesia injurious to health; on the contrary, I should be sorry to be without it. I have used it now for nearly twenty years, and take a spoonful every morning in a glass of cold water. I require no other medicine."

BISHOP'S

Granular Effervescent Citrate of Potash

Contains eight grains of this admirable anti-febrile salt in each drachm, keeps well, and yields a delicious effervescent draught. It is more efficient, more economical, and more convenient than the ordinary alkaline waters, and much superior to the various mixed powders, which consist mainly of tartrate of soda.

A Customer writes:-"It is the nicest effervescing preparation I have ever tasted, and is infinitely pleasanter than the bottled waters."

Dr. G. O. DREWRY, in his Common Sense Management of the Stomach, recommends for Indigestion, Constipation, &c., "the GRANULAR EFFERVESCENT CITRATE OF POTASH as a very agreeable, mild and cooling laxative, when taken in doses of one dessert-spoonful in half-a-pint of water before breakfast."

CAUTION.-Observe that the Name, Trade Mark, and Address of the Maker is on each Bottle.

Notwithstanding the long period Quinine has been in use by the Medical Faculty, its remarkable powers of repairing the loss of strength caused by disease, decay, prolonged harassing mental worry, or overwork, &c., &c., besides its direct qualities as a febrifuge and remedy for complaints of an intermittent character, it is only of quite late years that anything like a due amount of appreciation has been accorded to it. The combination of Quinine with Iron presents a tonic of undoubted efficacy; it may be stated to be the Best of all Tonics, as the powerful virtues of both are consolidated, and their individual characteristics preserved.

The principal property of the Iron is its chemical action on the blood, which it greatly enriches by increasing the quantity of the red corpuscular matter, on which the vital fluid depends for performing its important functions.

PEPPER'S QUININE and IRON TONIC being certified as composed of these important medicines in their due proportions, may therefore be relied on in cases where a course of strengthening treatment is indicated, either with or without medical advice. It possesses all the powers of these valuable tonics in banishing diseases and symptoms traceable to weakness. It rouses and developes the nervous energies, enriches the blood, promotes immediate appetite, dispels langour and depression, fortifies the digestive organs. It is a specific remedy for Neuralgia, Indigestion, Fevers, Chest Affections, and in Wasting Diseases, Scrofulous tendencies, &c. The whole frame is greatly invigorated by Pepper's Tonic, the mental faculties are brightened, the nervous and muscular system strengthened, and a return to robust health is certain. Bottles containing 32 doses, 4s. 6d. ; next size, 115.

Sold by all Chemists everywhere, and at 237, TOTTENHAM-COURT ROAD. The name of JOHN PEPPER is on the Label in Red Ink.

SYMPTOMS OF LIVER DERANGEMENT.-It chiefly arises in persons over thirty years of age, though frequently younger, and is met with principally in those who lead a very sedentary or irregular life. It is caused by intense study, indolence, hard drinking, too frequent use of tea, tobacco, and other sedatives; immoderate repletion, and over distention in the stomach; deficiency in the secretion of the bile or gastric juice; and everything that tends to diminish the amount of nervous influence transmitted to the stomach, giving rise to atony or weakness of the affected parts, accompanied by a deficiency of the fluids secreted by them, resulting in a furred tongue, with a disagreeable taste in the morning, and the breath always more or less offensive, a complete disrelish for food, flatulency, acidity or heartburn, costiveness, pain in the eyeballs, irritability, a sense of chilliness preceding pain (sometimes dull, sometimes sharp), from one side of the back to the top of the shoulder, frequently accompanied with oppression of breathing and difficulty of lying, except on the side affected, together with nausea and often rejection of bilious matter, headache or giddiness, general torpidity and disinclination for any exertion, and many other symptoms, for which TARAXACUM and PODOPHYLLIN is recommended as a cure.

TARAXACUM AND PODOPHYLLIN-A Purely Vegetable Medicine, is sold by Chemists everywhere, in bottles containing 12 doses, 25. 9d.; or 24 doses, 4s. 6d. Intending purchasers are requested to particularly require their Chemist to get Taraxacum and Podophyllin prepared by JOHN PEPPER, London.

MEDICAL OPINIONS.

From JOHN TANNER, M.D., L.R.C.P., M.R.C.S, L.S.A., L.M., Physician to Farringdon Dispensary, &c."It gives me great pleasure to bear testimony in favour of FREEMAN'S Chlorodyne. I have prescribed it extensively, and find it in every respect far superior to any of the spurious compounds sold under the name of Chlorodyne. In cases of Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, the last stage of Phthisis, and the Winter Cough of the aged, I have never found any substitute or chemical combination its equal; moreover, in all cases where a Sedative is required, it is a certain, safe, and agreeable remedy."

From T. D. SWALLOW, M.D., M. R.C.S. Eng., L.S.A., Surgeon to the Royal South London Dispensary, and Medical Officer to the London City Missions, &c.-"I have great pleasure in stating that I am constantly prescribing FREEMAN'S Chlorodyne in Consumption and Asthma, and as a Sedative in Cancer: and in cases of Diarrhoea and Dysentery I am daily witnessing its striking effects."

From C. SWABY SMITH, M.R.C.S. Eng., L.S.A., Surgeon to the Berks and Hants Extension Railway Works and Pewsey Union; Author of "On the Treatment of Diphtheritic Sore Throat," &c.-" Having been in the habit of using Mr. FREEMAN'S Chlorodyne for some time past, I have much pleasure in stating that it has never failed to have the desired effect in whatever case it has been administered.”

From Dr. W. GIBSON BOTT, L.R.C.P.E., M.R.C.S. Eng., and L.M.; Hon. Surgeon to the Farringdon General Dispensary, London.-" Having extensively used FREEMAN'S Chlorodyne for many years, I am of opinion that it is a remedy of incalculable value to the Profession and the Public generally. In Chronic Bronchitis and Consumption I have been especially gratified with its effects, quieting the Cough and soothing the general irritability in a marvellous manner. I am also constantly in the habit of prescribing it where my object is to relieve pain or procure sleep, and I know of no preparation which combines so many and such varied analities."
