The Kinfman.

THE SON OF MAN.

Spread thy fkirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinfman. Ruth iii. 9.

He took not upon him the nature of angels, but th feed of Abraham. Heb. ii. 16.

JESUS,

ESUS, we claim thee for our own ;
Kinfman, near allied in blood:
Flesh of our flefh; bone of our bone;
The Son of man; the Son of God:
Oh may we lie at thy dear feet,
Our fentence from thy mouth to meet !

2 Partaker of our flefh below,

3

To thee, O Jefus, we apply;
Thou wilt thy poor relations know,
Thou never canft thyfelf deny;
Nor caft us from thy guardian care,
Nor flight a feeking finner's pray'r.

Thee, Saviour, in our greatest need,

We truft our greatelt friend to prove;
Now o'er thy waiting fervants fpread

The fkirt of thy redeeming love:
Under thy wings protecting, take
And fave us for thy mercies' fake.

The Mystery of Godliness.

Thought it norobbery to be equal with God. Phil. ii. 6. And he brought fortb her firfi-born fon. Luke ii. 7. This is our God. If. xxv. 9.

I JESUS, all praife is due to thee,

JESI

That thou waft pleas'd a man to be; A virgin's womb thou didst not scorn, And unto us a child waft born.

2 The bleffed Father's only Son

Does condefcend to quit his throne;
And, though the high and mighty God,
Affumes our feeble flesh and blood.

3 Whom earth could not contain, nor fkies,
Now in a manger meanly lies;

He who the earth's fonndation laid
Is now a little infant made.

4 The Son, th' almighty God confeft,
In his own world becomes a gueft;
And open'd, through himself-THE WAY—
A paffage to eternal day.

5 For us thefe wonders he hath wrought-
Amazing love! furpaffing thought!
His name we blefs, his praise we fing;
Our God incarnate, and our King.

69,

The Incarnation.

Great is the mystery of godliness, God manifeft in the flesh. 1 Tim. iii. 16.

It becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Matt. iii. 15.

The chaflifement of our peace was upon him. Is. liii. 5.

Ι

IOH' how great's the mystery

Of incarnate Deity!

Human nature God affumes,
And to ranfom finners comes:
Chrift was not conceiv'd in fin,
But was infinitely clean;
Him no finful spot disguis'd;
Yet, lo! he was circumcis'd.

2 He fulfill'd all righteousness,
Standing in our legal place;
From the cradle to the cross,
All he did, he did for us:
He did all our woes retrieve;
He expir'd that we might live;
By his ftripes our wounds are heal'd;
By his blood our peace is feal'd.

3 Jefu's pain procures our eafe;
Jefu's death is our release;

Jefu's cross obtains our crown;
Jefu's fepulchre's our throne:
Lord, conform us to thy death;
Bid our fins yield up their breath;
By thy refurrection's pow'r
Make our fouls to glory foar.

The fame.

There was a multitude of the heavenly hoft, &c. Luke ii. 13.

The woman, being deceived, was in the tranfgreffion, notwithstanding he shall be faved in [rather through] childbearing. 1 Tim. ii. 14, 15.

Made of a woman-made under the law. Gal. iv. 4.

I

HARK! the herald angels fing.

Glory to the new-born King! "Peace on earth, and mercy "God and finners reconcil'd!"

mild;

2 Sons of Zion, too, arife!
Join the triumph of the skies;
And with angels loud proclaim,
"Chrift was born in Bethlehem."
3 Chrift-by highest heav'n ador'd;
Chrift-the everlasting Lord;
Late in time is pleas'd to come,
Offspring of a virgin's womb.

4 Ve l'd in flefh, the Godhead fee! Hail th' incarnate Deity!

5

God with us, Immanuel,

Pleas'd as man with men to dwell.

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Born to raise the fons of earth;
Born to give them fecond birth.

71.

A juft God and a Saviour.

He will magnify the law, and make it honourable.

If. xlii. 21.

He hath put away fin by the facrifice of himself. Heb. ix. 26.

By one man's obedience many are made righteous. Rom. v. 19.

H the pow'r of love divine!

Who its heights and depths can tell

Tell Jehovah's great defign

To redeem our fouls from hell!

2 Myf'ry of redemption this

All my
fins on Chrift were laid;
Mine offence was reckon'd his;
He the great atonement made."
