Chi mangia molto presto, o molto adagio dà segno di essere uno del volgo. Nell' primo caso si dà segno di povertà, nel secondo se pranzate fuori di casa fate capire che siete disgustato del vostro trattamento, e se pranzate in casa vostra, che siate tanto villano da lasciare a' vostri amici quello che non potete mangiar voi stesso. È pure villania cacciar il naso nel piatto inentre mangiate la minestra; così parimente è l'odorar le vivande sulla vostra forchetta avanti di mettervele in bocca. Dovremmo procurare d'accumular da

giovane un gran fondo di cognizione, poichè se in quell'età di dissipazione non possiamo farne grand' uso, pur verrà che ne avremo bisogno per far buona figura.

La cognizione del mondo s' acquista nel mondo, e non nella nostra camera di studio. I libri soli non v' istruiranno ́mai, ma suggeriranno molte cose alla vostra Osservazione, che altrimenti potrebbero sfuggirvi dalla riflessione, e le vostre osservazioni sul genere umano, quando le paragonerete con quelle che troverete nei libri, vi ajuteranno a fissare il vero punto.
