Though rais'd to a superior throne,
Where angels bow around,
And, high o'er all the shining train,
With matchless honours crown'd;
The names of all his saints he bears,
Deep graven on his heart;

Nor shall the meanest christian say,
That he hath lost his part.

Those characters shall fair abide,

Our everlasting trust,

When gems, and monuments, and crowns,
Are moulder'd down to dust.

So, gracious Saviour, on my breast,
May thy dear name be worn,

A sacred ornament and guard,
To endless ages borne.

HYMN 178.

Christ a merciful High Priest.
WITH joy we meditate the grace
Of our High Priest above;
His heart is made of tenderness,
And overflows with love.

Touch'd with a sympathy within,
He knows our feeble frame,

He knows what sore temptations mean,

For he has felt the same.

But spotless, innocent, and pure,
The great Redeemer stood,
While Satan's fiery darts he bore,
And did resist to blood.

He, in the days of feeble flesh,
Pour'd out his cries and tears,
And in his measure feels afresh
What every member bears.

He'll never quench the smoking flax,
But raise it to a flame;

The bruised reed he never breaks,

Nor scorns the meanest name.

Then let our humble faith address
His mercy and his power;
We shall obtain delivering grace
In the distressing hour.

HYMN 179.

Christ the River and Rock of his Church.

HE who on earth as man was known,
And bore our sins and pains,

Now seated on the eternal throne,

The God of glory reigns.

While harps unnumber'd sound his praise
In yonder world above,

His saints on earth admire his ways,
And glory in his love.

This land, through which his pilgrims go,
Is desolate and dry;

But streams of grace from him o'erflow,
Their thirst to satisfy.

When troubles, like a burning sun,

Beat heavy on their head,

To this Almighty Rock they run,
And find refreshing shade.

How glorious he! how happy they
In such a glorious friend!

Whose love secures them all the way,
And crowns them at the end,

HYMN 180.

"Unto you therefore which believe, he is pre

cious."

1 JESUS, I love thy charming name; "Tis music to my ear;

Fain would I sound it out so loud,

That earth and heaven should hear.

Yes, thou art precious to my soul,
My treasure and my trust:
Jewels to thee are gaudy toys,
And gold is sordid dust.

All my capacious powers can wish,
In thee doth richly meet;

Nor to mine eyes is light so dear,

Nor friendship half so sweet.

And shed its fragrance there;

The noblest balm of all its wounds,
The cordial of its care.

I'll speak the honours of thy name

With my last labouring breath;
Then speechless clasp thee in my arms,
The antidote of death.

HYMN 181.

Gratitude.

LORD, when my thoughts delighted rove

Amid the wonders of thy love,

The sight revives my drooping heart,

And bids invading fears depart.

Guilty and weak to thee I fly,

On thy atoning blood rely,

And on thy righteousness depend,

My Lord, my Saviour, and my Friend.

MISCELLANEOUS.

Be all my heart, be all my days,
Devoted to thy single praise;
And let my glad obedience prove
How much I owe, how much I love.

HYMN 182.

"Without holiness no man shail see the Lord."
1 THE Lord receives his highest praise
From humble minds, and hearts sincere;
While all the loud professor says
Offends the righteous Judge's ear.
To walk as children of the day,
To mark the precept's holy light,
To wage the warfare, watch, and pray,
Show who are pleasing in his sight.
Easy indeed it were to reach

A mansion in the courts above,
If swelling words and fluent speech
Might serve instead of faith and love.

But none shall reach the blissful place,
Or God's unclouded glory see,

Who talk of free and sovereign grace,
Unless that grace hath made them free.

HYMN 183.

Consecration of the heart to Christ.

1 O THOU, who camest from above,
The pure, celestial fire to impart,
Kindle a flame of sacred love,
On the mean altar of my heart!
There let it for thy glory burn,
With inextinguishable blaze;

2

And trembling to its source return,
In humble prayer, and fervent praise.

Jesus, confirm my heart's desire
To work, and speak, and think for thee;
Still let me guard the holy fire,
And still stir up thy gift in me.

Ready for all thy perfect will,
My acts of faith and love repeat,
Till death thy endless mercies seal,
And make the sacrifice complete.

HYMN 184.

The christian change.

I LET worldly minds the world pursue,
It has no charms for me;

4

Once I admir'd its trifles too,
But grace has set me free.

Its pleasures now no longer please,
No more content afford;

Far from my heart be joys like these,
Now I have seen the Lord.

As by the light of opening day

The stars are all conceal'd;
So earthly pleasures fade away,
When Jesus is reveal'd.

Creatures no more divide my choice,
I bid them all depart;

His name, and love, and gracious voice

Have fix'd my roving heart.

HYMN 185.

For spirituality of mind.

1 O! FROM the world's vile slavery, Almighty Saviour, set me free;

And as my treasure is above,

Be there my thoughts, be there my love.
