PREFACE.

THE object of the present Manual is briefly indicated by the title which it bears. It is an attempt to set forth the qualifications and duties of a Sunday school teacher, on the basis of recognised educational principles; and to show how those principles, and the rules and methods to which they give rise, may be applied to the instruction of children and young persons in the truths of the Sacred Scriptures.

Starting from the rudimentary facts of mental science, the Author has sought to explain, in a familiar manner, the nature and mode of development of a child's intellectual and moral faculties, and the relations of the young mind and heart to the Deity and His revealed will.

Passing then to the practical work of religious tuition as carried on in Sunday schools, the principles and methods of teaching are briefly, but, it is hoped, clearly set forth, and the modes of applying them in class instruction are described. Some suggestions on the government and discipline of Sunday scholars, and on the relations sustained by the teacher to his co-workers and to the parents of his pupils, form the concluding chapters of the Manual.
