MAYOR'S

PORTLAND, March 6, 1556. }

To his Honor the Mayor of Detroit:

Dear Sir:-It gives me great pleasure-in obedience to an order of the City Council-to forward to you a view of the city of Portland, presented by the corporation of this city to the corporation of Detroit. Our great railway has brought Portland and Detroit into near neighborhood to each other, and we wish to express to you the kind feelings entertained by all our people towards those of the beautiful and flourishing "City of the Straits."

Doyle offered the following: Resolved, That this Council have great pleasure in offering to the Mayor and City Council of Portland the thanks for their handsome and valued token of their respect presented this morning, which they will cherish as an evidence of the kindly feeling uniting two cities connected with the ties of social and commercial interests.

Resolved, That the Mayor be requested to procure an engraving of the city of Detroit, prop. erly framed, and present it, with a copy of the charter and ordinances, to the city of Portland. Adopted.
