to engage at the very outset with difficulties which need not have been met until he was well advanced on his road. It is by such encounter alone that he can learn to sympathise with those who first overcame in them, and that he is placed in "connection with that chain of conducting minds" who have brought science to its present condition. If such sympathy has been in any degree aroused, my object has been in the same measure accomplished; but if not, let us hope that some one else may be found to pursue the same path with greater diligence and success than may have been my lot to attain.
