COMPOUND ADDITION. Compound Addition teaches to find the sum of two or more numbers of several denominations.

RULE. 1. Place the numbers'so that those of the same denomination may stand directly under each other, and draw a line beneath them.

2. Begin at the lowest denomination, and add the 'figures in that denomination, as in simple addition; then, as many of the next greater denomination as are contained in that sum, carry to the next denomination, and set down the remainder: proceed in the same manner to the last denomination, which must be added, as in simple addition.

In the first example, beginning with the farthings, I add them together, and find the sum to be 6 farthings, which are 1 penny, and 2 farthings over; I set down the farthings, and carry 1 to the next de'nomination, adding it and all the figures in that place together, which make 28 pence, or 2 shillings and *4 pence ; " I set down 4, and carry 2 to the next des nomination, adding it and the figures in that place, as

before, which make 41 shillings, equal to 2 pounds 1 shilling : I then set down 1, and carry 2 to the last place, or denomination of pounds, where I add and carry, as in simple addition.
