PROVISIONAL FRANKS

HAND STAMP-TYPE X

The use of a provisional frank was due to the demand of W. F. & Co. franked envelopes during the railroad strike in California in 1894. To satisfy the demands of the public the agents of the W. F. & Co. at SANTA BARBARA, LOS ANGELES and SAN DIEGO used both plain and current U. S. embossed envelopes and sold them with provisional franks. All types are very rare because these provisional franks were only four days in use.

1. SANTA BARBARA OFFICE.

The frank consisted of a four line inscription in an oval measuring 26x44mm.; "Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express-*Jul. 1894*-Agent-Santa Barbara, Cal." with date either "2" or "3" inserted in second line.

Purple on 2c, Columbian envelope, size 95x160 mm.

*NOTE.-There is but one unused copy extant, that is the sample sent into head office of the company, with letter of explanation by the agent. Only 327 copies of this Provisional frank were sold to the public.

2. LOS ANGELES OFFICE.

A double lined hexagon 31x49 mm. with the word "FRANK" above and four lines of inscription. Color purple.

[blocks in formation]

Inscription in four lines, "Paid-July, 1894-Wells, Fargo & Co., San Diego, Cal." with date inserted in second line, with the word "Franked" written across

Articles Solicited

Scott's wants articles written entertainingly and authoritatively about stamps and stamp collecting. Send in manuscripts. For every article which we accept for publication we will give in return a life subscription to SCOTT'S MONTHLY JOURNAL.

What you write does not necessarily have to be technical in character. But if it is technical, that fact will not hurt the chance of it being accepted-providing you keep in mind that technicality and dryness are not synonymous. Put pep and punch into what you write; our readers want these qualities— and you want them in the articles written by others. "A little humor now and then-"
