VI. And because the powers which God hath ordained,and the liberty which Christ hath purchased, are not intended by God to destroy,but mutually to uphold and preserve one another; they who upon pretence of Chriftian liberty, fhall oppofe any lawful power, or the lawful exercise of it, whether it be civil or ecclefiaftical, refift the ordinance of God p. And for their publishing of fuch opinions, or maintaining of fuch practices, as are contrary to the light of nature, or to the known principles of christianity, whether concerningfaith, worship or converfation; or to the power of Godlincfs; or fuch erroneous opinions or practices as either in their own nature or in the manner of publishing or maintaing them, are deftructive to the external peace and order which Chrift hath established in the church; they may lawfully be called to account,and proceeded against by the cenfures of the church q,

CHAP. XXI. Of religious worship, and the iabbath-day.

ceptable way of worshipping the true God is inftituted by himfelf,and fo limitated by his own revealed will, that he may not be worshipped according to the imaginations and devices of men or the fuggeftions of Satan, under any visible reprefentation,or any other way not prescribed in the holy Scriptures II. Religious worship is to be given to God, the Father, Son, and holy Ghoft; and to him alone c: not to angels, faints,

the world are clearly feen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; fo that they are without excufe. Acts 17.24.Godthat made the world, and all things therein, feeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands. Pfal. 119.68. -Thouart good,and doftgood; teach me thy ftatutes. Jer. 10. 7. Who would not fear thee, O king of nations? for to thee doth it appertain; forafmuch as among all the wife men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee. Pfal. 31.23. O love the Lord,all yehis faints; for the Lord preferveth the faithful, and plentifuly rewardeth the proud doer. Pfal. 18. 3. I will call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised; fo fhall I be faved from mine ene mies. Rom. 10. 12. Thou shalt not bow down thy felf to them, nor ferve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, vifiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me. v. 6. And fhewing mercy unto thoufands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Col. 2.23. Which things have indeed a fhew of wifdominwill-worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body,not in any honour to the fatisfying ofthe flesh.
