counteth their perfons righteous in his fight y; not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them 7, but only for the perfect obedience and full fatisfaction of Chrift, by God imputed to them a, and received by faith alone b. Q. 71. How is justification an act of God's free grace? A. Although Chrift, by his obedience and death, did make a proper, real, and full fatisfaction to God's justice in the behalf of them that are justified c; Yet in as much as God of God. Rom.4.5. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that juftifieth the ungodly,hisfaith is counted for righteoufnefs. y 2 Cor. 5. 19. To wit, that God was in Chrift,reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trefpaffes unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation, 7, 21. For he hath madehim to befin for us, whoknew no fin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.Rom. 3. 22. Even the righteousness of Godwhich is byfaithof Jefus Chrift unto all,and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference, v. 24. being juftified freely by his grace,throughthe redemption that is in Jefus Chrift: v. 25. Whom God hath fet forth to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to declarehis righteousness for the remiffion of fins that are paft,through the forbearance of God. v. 27. Where is boafting then? it is excluded. By what law? of works? nay; but by the law of faith. v. 28. Therefore we conclude, that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. z Tit.3.5, Not by works of righ teoufnefs,which we have done,but according to his mercy he faved us by the washing of regeneration,& renewing of the holy Ghoft. * v.7. That being juftified by his gracewe fhould be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Therefore as by the offence of one,judg ment came upon all men to con demnation; even fo by the righte oufnefs of one, the free gift came upon all men unto juftification of life. v. 19. For as by one mans difobedience many were made finners: fo by the obedience of one, fhallmanybemaderighteous.Rom. 4.6. Even as David also describeth the bleffednefs of the man unto whom God imputeth righteoufnefs without works, v. 7. Saying, bleffed are they whofe iniquities are forgiven, and whofe fins are cove red. v. 8. Bleffed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute fin. b Acts 10. 43. To him give all the prophets witnefs,that through his name whofoever believeth in him,fhall receive remiffion of fins. Gal. 2. 16. Knowing that a man is not juftified by thework sof thelaw, but by the faith of Jefus Chrift, even we have believed in Jefus Chrift; that we might be justified by the faith of Chrilt, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law fhall no flesh be juftified. Phil. 3. 9. And be found in him,not having mine own righteoufnefs which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Chrift, the righteousness which is of God by faith. 71. c Rom. 5.8. But God commend. God accepteth the fatisfaction from a furety, which he might have demanded of them; and did provide this furety, his own only fon d, imputing his righteoufnefs of them e, and requiring nothing of them for their juftification but faith f, which mendethhislove towards,usin that while we were yet finners, Chrift died for us. v. 9. By lo much was Jefus made a furety of abetter teftament. Rom.8.32.He that spared not his own Son but delivered him up for us all, how fhall he not with him alfo freely give us all things? Pet. 1. 18. Q 72. What is justifying faith? A. Juftifying faith is a faving grace i, wrought in the heart of a finner by the spirit k and word of God, whereby he, being convinced of his fin and mifery, and of the difability in himself and all other creatures to recover him out of his loft condition m, not only affenteth to the truth of the promise of the gospel n, but receiveth and resteth upon Christ and his righteoufnefs therein held forth, for pardon of fin o, and for the accepting and accounting of his perfon righ 7. 25. Whom Godhath fet forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood,to declare his righteoufnefs for the remiflion of lins that are past,through the forbearance of God. g Eph. 2.8.For by grace are ye faved, through faith; and that not of yourselves;it isthe gift of God. h Eph.1.7. Faith juftifies a finner in the fight of God, not because of thofe other graces which do always accompany it, or of good works that are the fruits of it 4; nor as if the grace of faith, or any act thereof, were imputed to him for his ju ftification r; but only as it is an inftrument, by which he receiveth and applieth Christ and his righteousness 1. Q. 74. What is adoption? A. Adoption is an act of the free grace of God t, in and for his only Son Jesus Christ v, whereby all those that are juftified are received into the number of his children w, have his name put upon them x, the Spirit of his Son given to them, fhalt be faved,and thy house. But when the fulnefs of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, v. 5. To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of fons. w John. 12. Q. 75. What is fanctification? A. Sanctification is a work of God's grace, whereby they whom God hath before the foundation of the world chofen to be holy, are in time, through the powerful operation of his Spirit b, applying the death and refurrection of Chrift unto them c, renewed in their whole man after the image of Godd; having the feeds of repentance unto life, and all other faving graces, put into their hearts e, and thofe graces so stirred cometh, will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write up on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerufalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. y Gal. 4. 6. And becaufe ye are fons, God hath fent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Alba, Father. z Pfal. 103. 13. Like as a father pitieth his children: fo theLord pitieth them that fear him. Pro,14.26. In the fear ofthe Lord is ftrongconfidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge. Mat. 6. 32. And fuch were fome of you: but ye are washed,but ye are fanctified, but ye are justified in the name of up the Lord Jefus,and by the Spirit of our God. 2 Theff. 2. 13.Butwe are boundto give thanks to God alway for you, brethren,beloved of the Lord, becaufe God hath from the beginning chofenyou to falvation, thro' fanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth. c Rom. 6. 4.
