Q. 71. How is justification an act of God's free grace? A. Although Chrift, by his obedience and death, did make a proper, real, and full fatisfaction to God's justice in the behalf of them that are justified c; Yet in as much as God

Where is boafting then? it is excluded. By what law? of works? nay; but by the law of faith. v. 28. Therefore we conclude, that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Knowing that a man is not juftified by thework sof thelaw, but by the faith of Jefus Chrift, even we have believed in Jefus Chrift; that we might be justified by the faith of Chrilt, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law fhall no flesh be juftified. Q 72. What is justifying faith?

A. Juftifying faith is a faving grace i, wrought in the heart of a finner by the spirit k and word of God, whereby he, being convinced of his fin and mifery, and of the difability in himself and all other creatures to recover him out of his loft condition m, not only affenteth to the truth of the promise of the gospel n, but receiveth and resteth upon Christ and his righteoufnefs therein held forth, for pardon of fin o, and for the accepting and accounting of his perfon righ

Q. 73. How doth faith justify a finner in the fight of God A. Faith juftifies a finner in the fight of God, not because of thofe other graces which do always accompany it, or of good works that are the fruits of it 4; nor as if the grace of faith, or any act thereof, were imputed to him for his ju ftification r; but only as it is an inftrument, by which he receiveth and applieth Christ and his righteousness 1.

Q. 74. What is adoption?

A. Adoption is an act of the free grace of God t, in and for his only Son Jesus Christ v, whereby all those that are juftified are received into the number of his children w, have his name put upon them x, the Spirit of his Son given to them,

Q. 75. What is fanctification?

A. Sanctification is a work of God's grace, whereby they whom God hath before the foundation of the world chofen to be holy, are in time, through the powerful operation of his Spirit b, applying the death and refurrection of Chrift unto them c, renewed in their whole man after the image of Godd; having the feeds of repentance unto life, and all other faving graces, put into their hearts e, and thofe graces so stirred

cometh, will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write up on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerufalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
