A. Under the new teftament Christ hath inftituted in his church only two facraments, Baptifm, and the Lord's fupper d.

Q. 165. What is Baptifm?

A. Baptifm is a facrament of the new teftament, wherein Christ hath ordained the washing with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Ghost e, to be a fign and feal of ingrafting into himselff, of remiffion of - fins by his blood g, and regeneration by his fpirit h; of a-doption i, and refurrection unto everlasting life k; and whereby the parties baptized are folemnly admitted into the vifible church, and enter into an open and profeffed engagement to be wholly and only the Lord's m. A. Baptifm is not to be adminiftred to any that are out of the vifible church, and fo ftrangers from the covenant of promife, till they profefs their faith in Christ, and obedience to him n; but infants defcending from parents, either both or but one of them, profeffing faith in Chrift and obedience to him, are in that refpect within the covenant, and to be baptized o.

A. The needful but much neglected duty of improving our baptifm is to be performed by us all our life long, efpe éially in the time of temptation,and when we are prefent at the adminiftration of it to others p, by ferious and thankful confideration of the nature of it, and of the ends for which Christ instituted it, the privileges and benefits conferred and fealed thereby, and our folemn vow made therein q; by being humbled for our finful defilement, our falling short of, and walking contrary to, the grace of baptifm and our engagements r; by growing up to affurance of pardon of fin, and of all other bleffings fealed to us in that facrament i; by drawkingdom of God.Rom.11. 16.For foin thelikenessofhis refurrection. if the first fruit be holy, the lump is alfo holy; and if the root be holy, fo are the branches.

Q. 169. How hath Chrift appointed bread and wine to be given and received in the facrament of the Lord's Supper?

A. Chrift hath appointed the minifters of his word, in the administration of this facrament of the Lord's fupper, to fet apart the bread and wine from common ufe by the word of inftitution, thanksgiving and prayer; to take and break the bread, and to give both the bread and the wine to the com municants: who are by the fame appointment to take and eat the bread, and to drink the wine: in thankful remembrance that the body of Christ was broken and given, and his blood fhed for them f.

Q. 170. How do they that worthily communicate in the Lord's fupper, feed upon the body and blood of Chrift therein?

A. As the body and blood of Chrift are not corporally or carnally prefent in, with, or under the bread and wine in the Lord's fupper g; and yet are fpiritually prefent to the faith of the receiver, no lefs truly and really than the elements themselves are to their outward fenfes h; fo they that worthi

communion of the blood of Chrift? the bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Chrift?
