CHAP. XI. Of Juftification.

HOSE whom God effectually calleth, he alfo freely juT ftifieth a: Not by infufing righteoufnefs into them, but by pardoning their fins,and by accounting and accepting their perfons as righteous: Not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Chrift's fake alone: Not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evange ical obedience, to them as their righteoufnefs b; but by imputing the obedience & fatisfaction of Chrift unto them b,

Which is not another; but there be fome that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Chrift. v.8. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gofpelunto you, than that which we have preached unto you,let him be accurled.

I.a Rom.8.30.Moreover, whom he did predeftinate, them he alfo called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he juftified, themhealfo glorified. Rn. 3.24. Being juftified freely by his grace,through the redemptionthat is in Jefus Christ.

b Rom. 4. 6. But to him that worketh not,but believeth on him thatjuftifieththeungodly,his faith is counted for righteoufnefs, v. 6. Even as David alfo defcribeth the bleflednels of the man,unto whom

they receiving and refting on him and his righteousness by faith; which faith they have not of themselves, it is the gift of God c.

II.Faith, thus receiving and refting on Chrift and his righteouf

God imputeth righteoufnefs without works.. 7.Saying,bleffed are theywhofe iniquities are forgiven, and whofe fins are covered. v. 8. Bieffed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute fin. Cor, 5. 19. To wit,that God was inChrift, reconciling the worldunto himself, not imputing their trefpaffes unto them; and hath committed unto usthe word of reconciliation. 21. For he hath made him to be finfor us, who knew nofin,that we might be made the righteoufnefs of God in him. Rom.3. 22. Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of elus Chrift unto all, and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference. . 24. Being juftified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jefus Chrift: 25. Whom God hath fet forth to be a propitiation,through faith in his blood, to declare his rightcoufnefs for the remiffion of fins that are paft,through the forbearance of God. v. 27. Where is boatting then? it is excluded. By what law of works? Nay: But by the law of faith. . 28. Therefore we conclude, that a manis juftified by the faith without the deeds of the law. Tit.3.5 Not hyworks of righteoufnefs which we have done, but according to his mercy he faved us by the washing of regeration, and renewing of the holy shaft. . 7. That being juftified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Eph 1.7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgivenets of fins; ac cording to the riches of his grace. Jer. 23. 6. In his days Judah thall be faved,and Frael thall dwellfafe ly; and this is the name whereby

he fhall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. 1 Cor. 1. 30. But of him are ye in Chrift Jefus, who of God is made unto us wifdom,andrighteoufnefs, and fanctitication,and redemption. v.31. That, according as it is writ ten, he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. Rom.5.17.Fortby one mans offence,deathreigned by one; much morethey which receive abundance of grace, & of the gift of righteoufnels,thall reign in life by one, Jefus Chrift.7.18 Therefore as by the offence of one,judgment came upon all men to con demnation: even fo by the righteoufnefs of one, the free gift came upon all men unto juitification of life. v. 9. For as by one mans difobedience,many were made finners: fo bythe disobedience of one, fhall many be made righteous.

c Acts 10. 44. While Peter yet fpake thefe words, the holy Ghoft fell on all them which heard the word. Gal.2.16. Knowing that a manisnot juftified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jefus Chrift; even we have believed in Jefus Chrift, that we might be juItified by the faith of Chrift. and not by the works of thelaw: forby the works of the law fhall no fleth be juftified. Phil. 3. 9. And be found in him,nothaving mineown righteoufnels, which is of the law, but that which is through thefaith of Chrift, the righteoufnefs which is of God by faith. Acts 13.38. Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren,that thro' this man is preached unto you the forgivenefs of lins: v. 39. And by him all that believe are juftified from all things, from which ye could not be juftified by the law of Moles.

Eph.

teoufnefs, is the alone inftrument of juftification d; yet is it not alone in the perfon juftified, but is ever accompanied with all other faving graces, and is no dead faith, but work-eth by love e.

III. Chrift, by his obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all thofe that are thus juftified, and did make a proper, real and full fatisfaction to his Father's justice in their behalf. Yet, in as much as he was given by the Father for them,

Eph.2.7 That in the ages to come he might fhew the exceeding riches of his grace, in his kindness towards us, through Christ Jesus. v. 8. For by grace are ye faved, through faith; and that not of your felves: it is the gift of God. II. dJohn 1, 12. Butasmany as received him, to them gave he power to become the fons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Rom. 3. 28. Therefore we conclude, that a man is juftified by faith, without the deeds of the law, Rom.5.1.Therefore being juftified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ.

e James 2. 17. Even fo faith, if it hath not works, is dead being alone. v. 22. Seelt thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? ". 26. For as the body without the fpirit is dead, fo faith without works is dead alfo. Gal. 5. 6. For in Jefus Chrift, neither circumcifion availeth any thing, nor uncir, cumcifion; but faith which worketh by love.

III. f Rom. 5. 8. But God commendeth his love towards us, in that while we were yet finners, Chrift died for us. v. 9. Much more then being now juftified by his blood, we thall be faved from wrath through him. ". 10. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son: much more, being reconciled, we fhall be faved by his life, v. 19. For as by one mans difobe. dience, many were made finners:

fo by the obedience of one, shall many be made righteous. 1 Tim. 2.5. For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; v. 6. Who gave himself a ranfom for all, to be teftified in due time. Heb.10.10. By the which will we are fanctified through the offering of the bodyof Jefus Chrift once for all. v. 14. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are fanctified.. Dan. 9.24. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people,and up. on thy holy city,to finish thetranfgreffion, and to make an end of fins,andtomake reconciliation for iniquity, & to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to feal up the vilion and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy, v. 26. And after threefcore and two weeks, fhall Meffiah be cut off,but not for him, self: and the people of the prince that fhall come, fhall deftroy the city and the fanctuary, and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war defolations are determined. Ifa. 53. 4. Surely he hath born our griefs, and carried our forrows yet we did efteem him tricken, fmitten of God, and afflicted. v. 5. But he waswoundedforour tranfgreffions, he was bruifed for our iniquities: the chaftifement of our peace was upon him, and with his ftripes we are. healed.v. 6. All we like theep have gone aftray: we have turned every one to his own way, and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. v, 10. Yet it pleafed the
