Finding what per cent one number is of another number.

1. What part of $10 is $5?

Think $5 is 1⁄2 of $10, or 50% of $10.

The unknown number is the rate. Since the percentage equals the base multiplied by the rate, the rate must equal the percentage divided by the base. 15 divided by 75 is .20, or 20%. Or, 15 is, or, or 20%, of 75. Test: 20% of 75 = 15.

The rate equals the percentage divided by the base.

The unknown number is the base. Since the percentage equals the base multiplied by

the rate, the base equals the percentage divided by the rate, 3125 ÷ .33 = 9500, the number. Test: .33 of 9500 3135.
