snake, ostrich or emu, kiwi, ornithorhynchus or echidna, kangaroo or wallaby, armadillo or ant-eater, hedge-hog, porpoise, dog, cat, seal, elephant, pig, sheep, tapir, horse, lemur, monkey, any anthropoid ape, man.

(b.) 1. The chief characters of the classes and orders of the animal kingdom, including the more important extinct groups. 2. The typical mode of development, and the chief deviations from it, in the various classes of animals.

(c.) 1. The chief facts in the development of the chick. The main facts in the distribution of the vertebrata in space and time; the chief characters of the zoogeographical regions. 3. Philosophical Zoology:-The origin of species and the problems connected therewith, including the general relations of organism and environment.

Practical work. - (The examination to last for two days of six hours each.) The dissection and microscopical examination of the types required for the pass examination, together with the forms printed in italics under paper (a.) 1, above, together with the examination of embryos of the chick. Candidates will also be expected to recognise and describe any characteristic part of the skeletons mentioned under paper (a.) 2, above, as well as any typical example of invertebrate exoskeleton.

A candidate for Honours in Zoology will be required, on presenting himself for examination, to hand to the Supervisor a certificate from a teacher of Natural Science that he has passed a practical examination, and a paper (certified in like manner), embodying the results obtained by himself in some investigation or research in Zoology.

(C.) GEOLOGY.-Three papers, the division of subjects being left to the Examiner.

The subjects for the degree of Bachelor of Arts treated more fully, together with the following:

The microscopic character of rocks and the determination of their mineral constituents by the polariscope; deposits in lodes and mineral

veins; principles of theoretical Geology, especially in relation to cosmogony and secular climatic changes; the Geology and Palæontology of New Zealand.

Practical Examination.-The identification of the chief metallic ores. The identification of rocks by their microscopic characters. The identification and description of characteristic fossils. Field Geology.

A candidate for Honours in Geology will be required, on presenting himself for examination, to hand to the Supervisor a certificate from a teacher of Natural Science that he has passed a practical examination, and a paper (certified in like manner) embodying the results obtained by himself in some investigation or research in Geology.

(7.) Mental Science :

(a.) PSYCHOLOGY and ETHICS, treated more fully than for the degree of Bachelor of Arts.

(b) LOGIC, treated more fully than for the degree of Bachelor of Arts.

(c.) HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY, ancient and modern.

IV. Every candidate for Honours shall give notice in writing. of his intention to present himself for the Honours Examination, and of the subjects in which he proposes to be examined; and such notice must be sent so as to be in the hands of the Registrar by the 8th day of April preceding the examination. The fee must be paid to the Registrar by the 1st day of May, or, in default thereof, a special fee amounting to three times the ordinary fee must be paid by the 8th day of May; and if the fee is not duly paid the candidate's notice shall be void.

V. There shall be three classes of Honours-first, second and third; and the names of the successful candidates shall be arranged alphabetically in the several classes.

VI. The fee for the examination for Honours in Arts shall be one guinea, subject to the provisions of Section IV. of this Statute.

STATUTES OF N.Z. UNIVERSITY.-M.A. DEGREE.

THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS.

I. Candidates for the degree of Master of Arts must have taken the degree of Bachelor of Arts, either after examination or ad eundem.

II. Candidates for the degree of Master of Arts shall be examined in any one of the following groups of subjects: :-

Group I.-LANGUAGES and LITERATURE, any two of the following subdivisions:

1. LATIN.

2. GREEK.

3. ENGLISH.

4. Either FRENCH or GERMAN.

Group II.-POLITICAL SCIENCE, including

1. GENERAL HISTORY.

2. POLITICAL ECONOMY.

3. JURISPRUDENCE.

4. CONSTITUTIONAL HISTORY.

Group III.-MATHEMATICS and MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS.

Group IV.-PHYSICAL SCIENCE.

Group V.-CHEMISTRY.

Group VI.-NATURAL SCIENCE.

Group VII.-MENTAL SCIENCE.

III. The papers set for the examination for the degree of Master of Arts shall be the same as those set for the Honours Examination, and candidates will be required to show a degree of proficiency satisfactory to the Examiners, but not necessarily higher than that required for the third class in Honours.

STATUTES OF N.Z. UNIVERSITY.-M.A. Degree.

IV. Every Bachelor of Arts intending to proceed to the degree of Master of Arts shall give notice in writing to the Registrar of his intention to present himself for examination, and of the subjects in which he elects to be examined; and such notice must be sent so as to be in the hands of the Registrar by the 8th day of April preceding the examination. The fee must

be paid to the Registrar by the 1st day of May, or in default thereof, a special fee, amounting to three times the ordinary fee, must be paid by the 8th day of May; and if the fee is not duly paid, the candidate's notice shall be void.*

V. Bachelors of Arts, who may after examination have obtained Honours, shall be deemed to have passed the examination for the degree of Master of Arts.

VI. The fee for the examination for the degree of Master of Arts shall be one guinea, subject to the provisions of Section IV. of this Statute.

The Examination is held in November at Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin.

STATUTES OF N.Z. UNIVERSITY.

COURSE IN SCIENCE.

MATRICULATION EXAMINATION.

Identical with that for the Course in Arts.

THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE.

I. Except as provided in Sections IX. to XX. of this Statute, the subjects of examination for the degree of Bachelor of Science shall be:

1. MATHEMATICS.

2. PHYSICAL SCIENCE.

3. CHEMISTRY.

4. NATURAL SCIENCE.

5. LATIN.

5. GREEK.

7. ENGLISH.

8. MODERN LANGUAGES.

9. MENTAL SCIENCE.

The subjects shall be divided as follows:

(1.) Mathematics (Three papers):

(a.) ELEMENTARY GEOMETRY.-Euclid, Books I., II., III., IV., and VI., together with the definitions

of Book V.

TRIGONOMETRY.-The elementary
