TERMS AND LECTURES.

I. Any student matriculated to the University, whose name is on the books of an affiliated College, and who has attended its lectures and passed its annual examination, shall be deemed to have kept the terms of the year.

II. Any student may, on giving notice in writing to the Chancellor, transfer his name from the books of one affiliated College to those of another.

III. Any student who does not reside within ten miles of an affiliated College, or who is engaged in acquiring a profession or trade, or earning a livelihood, may keep terms without attending lectures; but a student entitled to exemption from attendance at lectures under this Statute must have his name on the books of an affiliated College, and must pass its annual examination in order to keep the terms of the year.*

IV. No student shall be allowed to present himself for examination in any branch of Physical Science, or of Natural Science, or of Chemistry, either at the annual examination of an affiliated College or at the examination for the degree of Bachelor of Arts or for the degree of Bachelor of Science or in any branch of Engineering, unless subsequently to matriculation he has both attended the regular course of instruction in the subject at the affiliated College to which he is attached, and gone through a prescribed course of practical work in the subject.

* Undergraduates desiring to take advantage of the provisions of this clause must forward to the Registrar of the University the following declaration :

"I, A.B., hereby declare that I am

1. Residing more than ten miles from an affiliated institution; or

2. Engaged in acquiring a profession or trade; or

3. Earning a livelihood;

and that I am therefore entitled to claim exemption from attendance at lectures."

[Nos. 1, 2, or 3 to be struck out according to circumstances.]

They must also give to the Registrar of their College, on or before 15th of August in each year, notice of their intention to come up for their annual examination, and of the subjects they propose to take up, forwarding also the fee prescribed by the College.

THE BOWEN PRIZE.

[This Prize arises from a donation by Sir G. F. Bowen, K.C.M.G., late Governor of New Zealand, of £100 for the purpose set forth in this Statute.]

I. There shall be a yearly prize, to be called the "Bowen Prize," of the value of not less than five pounds (£5), to be given for the best essay, as hereinafter provided. The prize, if a medal, shall be impressed with the arms of the University, and with the words "Bowen Prize" on the obverse side of the medal, and if of books, each volume shall be impressed with the arms of the University, and shall be suitably bound.

II. The prize shall be open to all matriculated students of the University who shall not have taken their degree, but shall not be awarded more than once to the same undergraduate.

III. The Examiners shall be the Chancellor, the ViceChancellor, and one other person to be appointed by the Senate of the University in each year: Provided that such last-mentioned person shall hold office till the appointment of his successor : Provided also that in the case of a vacancy occurring in the above-mentioned body of Examiners, the Chancellor, or in his absence, or in case of his inability from any cause to act, the Vice-Chancellor, shall appoint some fit person to supply such

vacancy.

IV. The subject for the essay shall be selected by the Examiners appointed as above, or any two of them, and shall be given out in the month of March in each year; and the essays shall be sent in to the Registrar before the 31st day of December next ensuing.*

V. The subject of the essay shall be connected with or shall bear reference to British History, or the history, institutions, or destinies of the British Colonies, or any of them.

The essays must be sent in with a motto prefixed, but without the name of the writer attached thereto. The name and address of the candidate must be enclosed in a separate sealed envelope, on the outside of which is to be written the motto prefixed to the essay. Essays should be written on foolscap paper, with a margin of one inch. Competitors are specially advised to study conciseness and clearness of thought and expression. Very great importance will also be attached by the Examiners to originality and indepen dence of thought.

SCHOLARSHIPS.

THE VALUE AND TENURE OF ORDINARY
SCHOLARSHIPS.

I. There shall be ordinary Scholarships of two kinds, to be called Junior and Senior Scholarships respectively.

II. The Junior Scholarships shall be of the annual value of £40. The Senior Scholarships shall be of the annual value of £50.

III. The number of Senior Scholarships to be offered each year shall be nine. The number of Juniors Scholarships to be offered each year shall be fixed by the Senate at the annual meeting previous to the examination for such Scholarships.

IV. Any junior scholar who may become entitled to the benefit of a Senior Scholarship shall thereby vacate his Junior Scholarship; and no scholar shall in any case receive the emoluments of more than one Scholarship at the same time.

JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIPS.

I. The Junior Scholarships shall be open to candidates who are between the ages of sixteen and nineteen on the 1st of December in the year in which they offer themselves for examination, and who have not been matriculated and who have not carried on their studies at any University College or University; and each Scholarship shall be tenable for three years, except as herein otherwise provided.

II. Candidates for Junior Scholarships must state the schools at which they have been educated during the previous five years.*

Places of Examination-Auckland, Gisborne, Napier, Wanganui, Wellington, Nelson, Greymouth, Christchurch, Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, Invercargill.

III. The Junior Scholarships shall be awarded at an examination to be held annually at the same time as the Matriculation Examination, and shall depend upon comparative excellence in any number (not exceeding five) of the following subjects:

1. LATIN.

2. GREEK.

3. ENGLISH.

4. FRENCH.

5. GERMAN.

6. MATHEMATICS.

7. HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY.

8. NATURAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE.

The time allowed for each paper set in these subjects shall be three hours.

The following shall be the papers set :

(1.) Latin:

(a.) THE MATRICULATION PAPER, in which shall be set, for candidates for Junior Scholarships only, additional and more difficult questions in grammar

(b.) TRANSLATION AT SIGHT FROM AND INTO LATIN, including at least one piece of simple historical narrative, for translation into Latin prose; and questions on history to the death of Augustus, and on antiquities.

(2.) Greek:

(a.) THE MATRICULATION PAPER, in which shall be set, for candidates for Junior Scholarships only, additional and more difficult questions in grammar.

(b.) TRANSLATION AT SIGHT FROM

AND INTO

GREEK, and questions on history to the fall of Corinth, and on antiquities.

(3.) English :

(a.) THE MATRICULATION PAPER.

(b.) PARAPHRASE, illustration, and explanation of passages selected from the works of any of the standard English writers; general questions on etymology, grammar, and the use of words; also a short essay on some easily understood subject.

(4.) French:

(a.) THE MATRICULATION PAPER

(b.) TRANSLATION

AT SIGHT FROM AND INTO

FRENCH of a more difficult kind than the exercises set in the Matriculation paper.

(5.) German :

(a.) THE MATRICULATION PAPER.

(b.) TRANSLATION AT

SIGHT FROM AND INTO

GERMAN of a more difficult kind than the exercises set in the Matriculation paper.

(6.) Mathematics:

(a.) ARITHMETIC (the whole subject), and ALGEBRA to quadratic equations inclusive; also Ratio, Proportions, Variation, the Progressions, Permutations, and Combinations.

(b.) EUCLID, Books I., II., III., IV. and VI, and PLANE TRIGONOMETRY to solution of triangles inclusive, with easy transformations and examples.
