PREFACE.

The thought happened to occur to the Author, a few months ago, that the MINERAL SPRINGS in the county of Saratoga, so highly celebrated, and commanding so general a resort, would furnish a good subject for a Poem, could justice be done it in the execution. To such a task he was far from considering himself as adequate, yet felt strongly inclined to make the attempt. The result is the Poem now offered to the public; the merit of which is submitted to the judgment of the reader. The history of such Springs, and of the region in which they are situated, is an object of rational curiosity, and therefore notes illustrating that sub. ject have been added, partly original, and partly extracted from the writings of others. The author has thought proper, also, to annex a short poem or two on other subjects, written, except a few alterations now made, many years ago, which he hopes will be found not altogether unacceptable.
