1. Give an account of S. John the Baptist in the wilderness, and a short summary of his preaching.

5. What does S. Matthew say about himself? Give his list of the twelve apostles.

6. In what respects does the Gospel of S. John differ from the other three Gospels? How may it be divided ? What events are recorded by S. John only?

7. Describe the geographical position of Galilee, Samaria, Judæa, and the course of the Jordan.

8. Give an outline of the conversation of our LORD with the woman of Samaria, mentioning the circumstances under which it was spoken.

9. Narrate fully the circumstances attending the raising of Lazarus, and the consequences resulting from it.

10. Before what tribunals was our LORD brought? State the crimes laid to His charge. For which of them was crucifixion the punishment?

11. Give the substance of our LORD'S examination before the High Priest.

12. Explain the following, and say by whom and on what occasion the words were uttered :

(i.) I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

(ii.) Destroy this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

(iii.) Let the dead bury their dead.

(iv.) Neither do men put new wine into old bottles.
(v.) We trusted that it should have been He which

should have redeemed Israel.

THREE-HOUR PAPER.

1. Give the gender, genitive singular, and genitive plural
of: cancer, nix, mons, collis, navis, dens, os, iter, civis, cor,
lis, modius, Caius, paries, pons.

2. Decline, through singular and plural, the nouns:
mare, mos, hiems, arcus, domus.

3. Decline, through the singular and plural, eques celer,
facinus atrox, opus grave, jus civile Romanum.

4. Give the degrees of comparison of benevolus, dubius, fa-
cilis, frugi, habilis, nequam, saluber, senex, vetus, bene, breviter.
5. Explain the difference between hic, is, iste, ille, and ipse.
6. Explain the terms parisyllabic, pronoun, ordinal,
anomalous; and give instances.

7. Define deponent verbs.

Give examples of Latin de-
ponent verbs of which the participles are sometimes used as
passive participles.

8. Give a list of the Latin verbs which have (i.) an active
form with a passive meaning, (ii.) an active present with a
perfect and passive form.

9. Write out the future of possum, volo, nolo; and give
the second person singular present indicative of fio, fero,
eo, queo, malo, potior, morior.

10. Give the perfect and supine of sterno, foveo, domo,
desino, temno, differo, exigo, condono, uro, contingo, coquo,
fundo, algeo, deleo.

11. What cases are governed by dives, utilis, dignus, parco,
potior, piget, miseret, obliviscor, suadeo, prosum, egeo, rogo?

12. When are ut and dum followed by an indicative, and
when by a subjunctive ? What is the difference between
vereor ne and vereor ut? Give examples.

13. In how many ways may the purpose after verbs of
motion be expressed? Illustrate your answer by translating
into Latin "The ambassadors came to seek peace."

14. Translate into Latin: (i.) the 10th of May; (ii) he
is just ten years old; (iii.) he spent three years at Rome and
five at Corinth; (iv.) wounded (saucius) in the feet; (v.)
it is of interest to me; (vi.) what is your name? (vii.) he
promised to write to me to-morrow.

15. Correct the following sentences: (i.) probus invidet
neminem; (ii.) amici quorum paucos habeo; (iii.) rex qui
male paretur infelicior est quam privato cive; (iv.) Caesar
dicitur maximum ducem fuisse; (v.) persuasus est mature
sibi esse moriendum; (vi.) non tibi talia verba uti lieet.

THREE-HOUR PAPER.

1. Of what elements is the English language composed, and at what periods were they severally introduced into this country?

2. Define root, stem, and inflexion. What case-endings remain in English? Give some adverbs which were once cases of nouns and pronouns.

3. Of what inflexions are nouns capable ? Write down those inflexions which are used to distinguish the feminine gender from the masculine.

4. Form the possessive cases of the singular of the following nouns; and state the rule according to which each is formed: dog, sheep, man, goose, conscience, brother-in-law.

5. Give the plurals of the following nouns, stating the rule for forming plurals which each form illustrates:-church, stag, ox, foot, a knight templar, Mr. Bell, son-in-law, virtue, præmium, sugar; and the peculiarity in the plurals of the last three.

6. Discuss the following suffixes as to their meaning and origin: -ster, -hood, -age, -t, -dom, -ess, -ness, -ery, -tion.

7. Define an auxiliary verb. Which tenses in English are formed by inflexion, and which by the use of auxiliaries ? Give a list of the auxiliary verbs.

8. How may strong verbs be classified? Give the past tense and past participles of set, sit, wring, sing, thrust, loose, lose, bind, find, rid, ride, awake.

9. Distinguish between a phrase, a clause, and a sentence. Name the three kinds of subordinate clauses which may be found in a complex sentence; and give an illustration of each kind.

10. What is meant by the analysis of sentences? Analyse the following sentence:-" Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it." 11. Explain the phrases :-"It is quite common now-adays." "He went a-fishing." "One sees all sorts of queer sights there." "He ran a race." "Methought I had lost my way." "Build me a house." "It happened long ago." "How do you do?" "The book is printing." "He is coming." 12. Correct or justify the following phrases:-(i.) “Neither our virtues or vices are all our own." (ii.) "Between you and I it is not right." (iii.) "He is not the man as told me the story." (iv.) Many a man thinks so." (v.) "The sheep were scattered." (vi.) "He neither likes riding nor driving." (vii.)" All ye saints of His.”

1. Translate-an apple-pie, chocolate-cream, a ricepudding, the milk-jug, the oyster-woman. State such rules about the French definite article as hereby exemplified.

2. Give the rules for the formation of (i.) the plural of substantives, (ii.) the feminine of adjectives; with exceptions and examples of each.

3. Make porte-étendard plural; and state, with examples, how you form the plural of compound nouns in French, according to the nature of the compounds.

4. Give the plural of jeu, voix, chou, genou, régal, éventail, émail, clou, corail, ail.

5. Give the feminine of abbé, chanteur, loup, discret, sûr, roux, créé, sujet, épais, frais, exprès, faux, dissous, majeur. 6. What kinds of adjectives are generally placed after the substantives they qualify?

7. Write the following adjectives both before and after the substantive homme, and explain their meaning:-bon, galant, honnête, pauvre, petit.

8. When do vingt, cent, and mille take a final s (as mark of the plural), when not? Write in full the French of 1876.

9. Write the past participle and third person singular future indicative of:-envoyer, courir, acquérir, couvrir, voir, prévoir, battre, ceindre, faire, boire.

10. Write out the present and imperfect indicative of oublier and hair; the future indicative of faire and s'asseoir; the past and present participle of avancer, mourir, and absoudre.

11. What prepositions are required after favorable, reconnaissant, necessaire, ingrat, célèbre, soigneux, utile, propre, conforme, ennuyé, charmé, capable?

12. Translate the following sentences, and give the rules for the place of the personal pronoun object :-I lent it to him; he gave it to us; call him; do not call him.

13. When does the past participle of a verb agree (i.) with its subject, (ii.) with its object, and when is it invariable?

14. Give the English of the following adverbial locutions : de deux jours l'un; de rigueur; du haut en bas; de plus belle; de grè ou de force.

15. Translate the following sentences, and underline the word which in each of them is indispensable for the French construction, though not used in English:-Have you any books? Yes, I have many. Is your master at home? No, he is not. Are you happy? Certainly I am.

THREE-HOUR Paper.

1. State what you know about the origin of the ancient Britons. Sketch their religious institutions and practices. What were their Barrows, or Cromlechs?

2. What various races have made settlements on the British Isles, and at what times? Narrate briefly the Danish invasion in Ethelred II.'s reign.

3. What was the leading principle of the Feudal System as introduced by the Normans? In whose reign was the Feudal tenure of knight's service with its incidents, such as marriage and wardship, abolished by Act of Parliament ?

4. What was the principal object of Magna Charta? Which king granted it, and what made him grant it?

5. What was the cause of the Wars of the Roses? How long did they last? Name any six battles which took place during their continuance.

6. Write down the dates of the accession of the successive sovereigns of the House of Tudor, and show how the crown came into that family.

7. State briefly the circumstances which led to the civil war in Charles I.'s reign. Mention the principal leaders on each side.

8. Trace the descent of the reigning sovereign from James I.

9. What were the objects of the following treaties :Troyes; Secret Treaty of Dover; Utrecht; Paris, 1763; Versailles, 1782; Paris, 1815 ?

10. Give a short life of any three of the following:William Wallace, Wyclif, Joan of Arc, Wolsey, Cranmer, Hampden, Strafford, Laud, Oliver Cromwell, Duke of Marlborough, Washington, Duke of Wellington.

11. State the date and contending parties of the following battles-the Standard, Evesham, Dunbar, Bannockburn, Creçy, Poitiers, Agincourt, Tewkesbury, Bosworth; and state in each case which party was victorious.

12. Assign events to the following dates:-596, 871, 1085, 1164, 1264, 1282, 1534, 1588, 1603, 1645, 1662, 1666, 1679, 1689, 1690, 1775.
