PREFACE

IN publishing his "University Local Examination Papers," the Compiler's aim has been to produce a series of papers on those subjects which he found were usually selected in the most important of our public examinations; and he has endeavoured so to arrange the papers that they shall be, as far as possible, of progressive difficulty. In the case, however, of the Old Testament, New Testament, English History, and Euclid, it was deemed advisable to proceed on a slightly different plan: accordingly each portion of those subjects, which has ever been appointed for examination separately, has received a paper to itself (in some cases, two); as it was thought in this way a wider knowledge of each subject was likely to be attested on the part of the pupil; and besides these "special" papersif they may be so styled-one or two "general" papers have been added.

Each paper has not only been constructed of a sufficient length to occupy about one hour in its execution, but has also, for further convenience, been divided into two portions, as nearly equal in length and similar in character as it was possible,

under the circumstances, to make them, which may, if preferred, be set separately as half-hour papers.

A new feature has, it is believed, been introduced by the addition of a test-paper in each subject, to occupy three hours in working, which it will be found useful to set the pupils at the end of the Term (by way of an examination, if desired). The questions in these papers have purposely been chosen out of the preceding papers, on the principle that an examination is intended to find out what a pupil knows, not what he does not know.

Nothing more need be said in conclusion, except that none of the questions in the following papers are beyond the reach of the Junior Students for the Oxford and Cambridge Local Examinations; and that although it would be easy to set a very fair paper in most of these subjects without adopting a single one of the questions in this book, yet the Compiler believes that no candidate for any of the public examinations, who can answer satisfactorily the majority of the questions contained in the following pages, need have much fear as to his prospects of success.

The Compiler desires to acknowledge the valuable assistance rendered by his son, the Rev. A. G. LENNOX ROBERTSON, B.A., in the preparation of this work and of the Answer Book.
