GEOGRAPHY is that branch of mixed mathematics, which teaches the fituation extent, distance, &c. of all the countries, feas, empires, cities, towns, rivers, mountains, &c. on the face of the terraqueous globe. As a ftudy, it is rather an effort of memory than genius; the fhapes and fituations of countries fhould be ftudied as the letters of an alphabet are by a child; got by heart; and known, as one field is from another, by their shape and fituation. A few maps, and a little application, is therefore all the requifites neceffary to become a geographer.
