In addition to the above, Men Clerks (Lower Division), have been appointed to various Departments under Clause VII. of the Order in Council of 4th June 1870, and Clause XII. of the Order in Council of 12th February 1876.

GENERAL NOTICES

ISSUED FOR THE INFORMATION OF INTENDING CANDIDATES.

1. The Civil Service Commissioners can give no information as to salaries, duties, course of promotion, pensions, &c., except such as may be contained in any of the documents herein referred to.

2. The Commissioners cannot advise candidates as to their course of reading, nor can they recommend particular tutors or places of education. Except where otherwise stated in the documents herein referred to, no particular text books are prescribed or recommended.

3. All exceptions which can be admitted to the ordinary limits of age are specified in the documents herein referred to; where no exceptions are specified, none are allowed.

4. The Commissioners cannot undertake to answer inquiries relating to cases which are not officially before them for decision, nor can they decide, except in the cases of actual candidates, questions respecting the application of the rules contained in the documents herein referred to.

5. Particular answers cannot be given to inquiries which are answered expressly, or by implication, in this paper or in the documents to which it refers.

6. The Commissioners cannot undertake to send answers by telegraph, notwithstanding that a reply may have been paid for.

7. The Commissioners do not supply specimens of the examination papers used in any of their examinations, but copies of some of these papers are appended from time to time to their annual Reports, which can be obtained from the Queen's Printers through any bookseller.

8. Notice of any open competitive examinations which may be appointed to be held will be given by advertisement in some of the principal newspapers. Such advertisements will usually appear on Tuesdays or Saturdays. The Commissioners can in no case record the names of intending candidates until a particular examination is announced, nor can they undertake to send a separate notice to any particular person.

I.--HOME CIVIL SERVICE.

A.--OPEN COMPETITIVE EXAMINATIONS.

1. Open competitive examinations are held from time to time under Her Majesty's Orders in Council of 4th June, 1870, and 12th February, 1876, for clerkships, &c. in the departments specified in Schedule A. annexed to the first-named Order*. The regulations respecting these examinations will be sent on application, specifying the class of situation to which it refers.

2. Open competitive examinations for the situation of second class assistant of excise will, until further notice, be held half-yearly in the months of June and December. A copy of the regulations will be sent on application.

3. Open competitive examinations for the situation of out-door officer in the customs are held at intervals of about three months. A copy of the regulations will be sent on application.

4. Open competitive examinations are held under the Acts 7 & 8 Vict. c. 106 and 25 & 26 Vict. c. 106, for county surveyorships and district surveyorships in Ireland. These examinations take place from time to time as vacancies occur, and all particulars which can be given respecting them are advertised beforehand. A copy of the regulations issued on the last occasion will be sent on application.

5. Open competitive examinations are held annually in May for the admission of boys between the ages of 14 and 16 as engineer students in Her Majesty's dockyards. The list of candidates for these appointments will be kept at the Admiralty in Lon. don. All applications for the forms to be filled up by persons who wish to compete must be addressed to the Secretary of the Admiralty before the 1st of March in each year. Such applications should state the place at which the candidate desires to be examined.

6. Open competitive examinations are held annually in May for the admission of boys between the ages of 14 and 15 as apprentices in Her Majesty's dockyards. If desirous of being examined at any of the dockyards, boys should apply, before the 1st March in each year, to the superintendent of the yard; if in London, to the Civil Service Commissioners.

B.- EXAMINATIONS FOR WHICH A NOMINATION IS REQUIRED.

1. An official nomination is required for situations in departments not included in Schedule A., as well as for all situations which have been withdrawn therefrom, such as those of messenger, office keeper, warder, &c.

2. The Commissioners can give no information as to the persons from whom, or the means by which nominations are to be obtained.

3. The Commissioners can give no information as to the occurrence of vacancies in such situations.

4. Examinations for such situations do not take place at fixed intervals, but are held from time to time as candidates are nominated to fill the vacancies which

occur.

NOTE (1). Persons who have served as Pupil-Teachers or Schoolmasters in schools under inspection by the Committee of Council on Education, England, or by the Commissioners of National Education, Ireland, will be reported specially to those Departments, and such of them as have been trained in normal schools at the public expense will not be qualified to receive appointments until the consent of those Departments, given in conformity with rules sanctioned by the Lords of the Treasury, has been notified to the Civil Service Commissioners.

NOTE (2). Engineer Students in Her Majesty's Dockyards will not be qualified to receive appointments unless they shall have obtained the express consent of the Lords of the Admiralty.

II. TEMPORARY COPYISTS IN PUBLIC DEPARTMENTS.

The regulations respecting the employment of temporary copyists will be sent on application.

III. CIVIL SERVICE OF INDIA*: ROYAL INDIAN ENGINEERING COLLEGE: CEYLON PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT: ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY, WOOLWICH: ROYAL MILITARY COLLEGE, SANDHURST; ROYAL MARINES.

Information respecting examinations for the above will be sent on application. Tables showing the limits of age and subjects of examination prescribed for the various Departments of the Home Civil Service may be purchased (Price 1s. 9d.) of W.
