DIVISION of COMPOUND QUANTITIES. DIVISION of compound quantities teacheth to divide a compound quantity into any proposed number of equal parts.

RUL

E.

Place the divifor and dividend as in fimple quantities. Then, begin at the highest denomination, divide every denomination by the divifor, and write the quotients under the numbers you divide. But if there is a remainder in any denomination, except the least, reduce it to the next lower name, and add it to the denomination you are going to divide, before you divide it.

N O T E.

Ift. When the divifor exceeds twelve, "divide by two or more numbers whofe product is equal to the divisor. 2d. When the divifor cannot be produced by the multiplication of two or more numbers, divide as in long divifion.

3d. When the divifor contains 4, 4, or 4, multiply the divifor by 4, and add 1 for, 2 for, and 3 for 2. Divide the dividend, multiplied alfo by 4, by this product and the quotient will be the answer.

PRO O F.

This is done by the rule for proving divifion of fimple quantities.
