REDUCTION.

REDUCTION teacheth to change quantities from a higher denomination to a lower one, from a lower denomination to a higher one, and from one denomination to another their value being equal.

[ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

When a quantity is brought from a higher to a lower denomination; as pounds to pence, tons to ounces, it is performed by multiplication only, and is called Reduction defcending. When a quantity is changed from a lower denomination to a higher one; as pence to pounds, yards to miles, it is done by divifion only, and is called Reduction afcending. And when a quantity is changed from one denomination to another; as pounds to guineas, hogfheads to puncheons, both multiplication and divifion are used, and it is called Reduction afcending and defcending.

RU L E.

In Reduction-defcending, multiply the highest denomination by as many as make one of the next lefs, and, to the product, add the odd parts of that lefs name, if any. Then, multiply the fum by as many as make the next lefs denomination, adding as before. Thus proceed till you come to the denomination fought.

In Reduction-afcending divide the denomination given by as many as make one of the next higher name, and the remainder, if any, call fo many of the first denomination. Then, divide that quotient by as many as are equal to one of the next higher name, valuing the

re

remainder as before. And thus proceed till you come to the name fought for.

In Reduction afcending and defcending, multiply or divide as the queftion may require, proceeding regu larly either upwards or downwards, by one name at a time, and adding or valuing the remainders by the above directions.
