THE

THE SINGLE RULE OF, THREE

THE fingle rule of three teacheth, by having three numbers or quantities given, to find a fourth either in direct or inverted proportion.

N O T E.

Direct proportion is when the fourth mumber or term bears the fame proportion to the third, as the first does to the fecond.

Inverted, or reciprocal proportion, is when the fourth number or term bears the fame proportion to the second, as the firft does to the third.

Direct and inverted proportion are only, different parts of one rule, and are best wrought by the fame method.

RULE for STATING.

[ocr errors]

Write down the given number or quantity which is of the fame name with the number required, placing the marks of proportion both before and after it; that is, the mark before, and the mark after it. Then, if the answer be more than that number, place the leffer of the other two terms on the left hand thereof, with the word as or if before it, and place the greater term on the right hand, without any word or mark after it: But if the answer be lefs than the middle number or term, make the greater number or quantity the first term, and the leffer the third.

METHOD of OPERATION.

Reduce the firft and third terms into the fame denomination, and the fecond into the loweft name mentioned. Then, multiply the fecond and third terms together, and divide the product by the firft term, and the quotient will be the answer in the fame denomination you left the fecond term in, which may be brought into a different denomination by the rules of reduction.

OBSE

R V E.

ift. Always multiply and divide as in multiplication and divifion of compound quantities, when it can conveniently be done.

2d. If a remainder be left after divifion, reduce it to the next name below the last quotient, divide by the fame divifor, and the quotient will be fo many of that next name. Do this, as long as there is a remainder, till it be brought into the loweft name, and all the quotients together will be the answer.

3d. If the firft term be unity, or one, the produc of the fecond and third terms, properly reduced, will be the answer. And if the third term be unity, or one, the quotient of the fecond term divided by the firft will also be the answer.

P R O O F.

The method of proof is by inverting the queftion.
