Whofe gentle beams and borrow'd light
Are fofter rivals of the noon :
4 Arife, and to that foy'reign Power
Waxing and waning honours pay,
Who bade thee rule the dusky hours,
And half fupply the want of day.
5 Ye glitt'ring ftars that gild the fkies,
When darknefs has its curtain drawn,
And keep your watch with wakeful eyes,
When bufinefs, cares and day are gone :
6 Proclaim the glories of your Lord,
Difpers'd through all the heavenly street,
Whofe boundless treasures can afford
So rich a pavement for his feet.

7 O God of glory, God of love,
Thou art our fun that makes our days;
With all thy fhining works above
We would unite to fing thy praife.

WATTS.

Pfalm.CXLVIII. 2d Part. L. M. [X

WAKE, ye tempefts, and his fame

A. In founds of dreadful praife declare;

While the foft whifper of his name
Fills every gentle breeze of air.

2 Let clouds, and winds, and waves agree
To join their praife with blazing fire;
Let the firm carth and rolling fea
In this eternal fong confpire.

3 Ye flowery plains, proclaim his skill;
Vallies, lie low before his eye;

And let his praife, from every hill,
Rife, tuneful, to the neighb'ring fky.

4 Ye 'ftubborn oaks, and stately pines,
Bend your high branches, and adore;
Praife him, ye beafts, in different strains;
The lamb fhall bleat, the lion roar.

5 Birds, ye fhall make his praife your theme,
Nature demands a fong from you;
While the dumb fish that cut the ftream
Leap up and mean his praises too.
6 Mortals, can you refrain your tongue,
When Nature all around you fings?
O for a fhout from old and young,
From humble fwains and lofty kings!
7 Wide as his vaft dominion lies,
Make the Creator's name be known;
Loud as his thunder fhout his praife,
And found it lofty as his throne.
JEHOVAH ! tis a glorious word!
O may it dwell on every tongue!

But thofe who beft have known the Lord,
Are bound to raise the nobleft fong.

When ye in dreadful ftorms confpire
To execute his word.

The God who rules above;
He brings his people near,

Of grateful praise.

Thou fource of light and heat,

Bright ruler of the day,

Difpenfing bleflings round,

With all diffufive ray :

From morn to night, With every beam,

Record his name,

Who gave thee light..

Thou moon in radiance mild,

With all thy ftarry train,

Which rife in fhining hosts,

To gild th' etherial plain :

With countless rays,

Prolong the theme,

Declare his name,

Reflect his praife.

Ye clouds, or fraught with showers,
Or ting'd with various dyes,

That pour your bleffings down,

Or charm our gazing eyes:

His goodness fpeak, His praife declare,
As through the air You shine or break,

Ye winds, that shake the world,
With tempefts on your wing,
Or breathe in gentle gales,
To waft the fmiling fpring:
Proclaim aloud,
His fov'reign will,

As you fulfil
The pow'rful Gop.
