WATTS

Second Part. L. M.

The Penitent reflored.

THOU, who hear'it when finners cry, Tho' all my climes before thee lie, Regard them not with angry look, But blot their memory from thy book. 2 Renew me, O my God, within, And form my foul averfe to fin; Let thy good Spirit not depart, Nor hide thy prefence from my heart. 3 I cannot live without thy light, Caft out and banish'd from thy fight; Thy holy joys, O God, reftore, And guard me that I fall no more. A broken heart, my God, my King, Is all the facrifice I bring;

4

The God of grace will not defpife
A contrite heart for facrifice.

5 My foul lies humbled in the duft,

And owns thy dreadful fentence juft:
Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye,
And fave the wretch condemn'd to die.
6 Then will I teach the world thy grace,
Sinners fhall learn to feek thy face;
I'll lead them in the heavenly road,
And they fhall praife a pardoning God.

Devotion and Confidence.

LET finners take their courfe

And choofe the road to death;
But in the praises of my God
I'll fpend my daily breath.

2 Thou wilt regard my cries,
O my eternal God;

While finners perish in surprise,
Beneath thy angry rod.

3 Because they dwell at eafe,
And no fad changes feel,
They neither fear thy holy name,
Nor learn to do thy will.
4 But like an olive tree,
Within thy courts I'll stand,
And confidently, Lord, rely
On thy protecting hand.
5 With all my heavy cares,
I'll lean upon the Lord;
I'll caft my burden on his arm,
And rest upon his word.
6 His arm fall well fustain
The children of his love;

The ground on which their fafety ftands
No earthly power can move.

WATTS and MERRICK.

Long Metre. [* or ]

Compared with Rom. iii. 10, 11.

The Degeneracy of the World removed by the Gospel. EHOLD the fool whofe heart denies The God who form'd the earth and fkies! And, whilft the path of fin he treads, How wide the dire example fpreads!

2 Th' eternal Sovereign from on high
Caft on the fons of men his eye;
To fee if any understood,

And fear'd and lov'd their Maker, God.
3 But all were fo degenerate grown,
None the true God had fully known!
Both Jew and Gentile long had been
By luft enflay'd, and dead in fin.
4 Both gone from wifdom's path aftray,
Purfu'd the errors of their way,
With difmal fuperftition blind,
And caufelefs terrors fill'd their mind.
Who, gracious God, to finners eyes
Could bid the wifh'd falvation rife?
Thy SON did light and truth difplay,
And turn their darkness into day.

6 No flefh fhall boast of righteousness,
But guilty fhall themselves confefs;

And when they hear thy pardoning voice,
In thy falvation fhall rejoice.

MERRICK, with additions.

Palm LIV. Particular Metre. [b]

THY

Deliverance from Enemies.

HY name, O God, my heart avows,
Do thou my injur'd cause espouse,
And be thy itrength my aid;

My fervent cries in mercy hear,
And let them by thy pitying ear
With full regard be weigh'd.
2 For people from thy fear eftrang'd,
With tyrants fierce, against me rang'd,
My fainting foul pursue;

But midft my helpers, heaven's high Lord
Shall ftand, and faithful to his word,
Each adverse power fubdue.

30 let my heart, their rage repell'd,
Itfelf a willing offering yield;

To thee its praife fhall flow;

Whilft to my thought thy mercies rife,
That gave me with exulting eyes

0

To fee my proftrate foe.

MERRICK

Impatience corrected by Faith.

WERE I like a feather'd dove!
If innocence had wings,

I'd fly, and make a long remove
From all thefe reftlefs things.
2 Let me to fome wild defart go,
And find a peaceful home;
Where ftorms of malice never blow,
Temptations never come.

3

Vain hopes, and vain inventions all,
T'efcape the rage of hell!

The mighty God, on whom I call,
Can fave me here as well.

4 By morning light I'll feek his face,
At noon repeat my cry;

The night fhall here me afk his grace,
Nor will he long deny.

5 God, my preferver and my friend,
Can fhield me when afraid;
Ten thoufand angels must attend,
If he command their aid.

I'll caft my burdens on the Lord,
He will fuftain them all;

My faith fhall reft upon his word,
And I fhall never fall.

WATTE

Pfalm LVI. Common Metre.
God's Care of his People.

'N God, most holy, juft and true,
I have repos'd my truft;
Nor will I fear what man can do,
The offspring of the dust.

2 God counts the forrows of his faints,
Their cries affect his ears;

4

Thou haft a book for their complaints,
A bottle for their tears.

Thy folemn vows are on me, Lord,
Thou shalt receive my praife;
I'll fing, "how faithful is thy word,
How righteous are thy ways!"

Thou haft fecur'd my foul from death;
O fet thy fervant free,

That heart and hand, and life and breath
May be employ'd for thee.
