The pupil, having performed the foregoing questions, will perceive, that ADDITION is the collecting of numbers together to find their sum. Hence the propriety of the following rule. RULE. Write units under units, tens under tens, &c. Then add upwards the units, and find how many tens are contained in their sum. Write down directly below what remains more than those tens; or, if nothing remains, write down a cypher and carry as many units to the next column as there are tens. Then add up the second column, together with the number carried, in the same manner as before. Proceed in this way, till the whole is finished, writing down the total amount in the last column. PROOF. Begin at the top, and add together all the columns of numbers downwards, in the same manner, as they were before added upwards; then if the two sums agree, the work is right. 21. What is the sum of the following numbers, 183, 765, 838, 375, 857, and 431 ? Ans. 3449. 22. Add the following numbers, 3791, 83, 71678, 96, 786, 4711, and 99. Ans. 81244. 23. Gave 73 dollars for a watch, 15 dollars for a cane, 119 dollars for a horse, 376 dollars for a carriage, and 7689 dollars for a house. How much did they all cost? Ans. 8272 dollars. 24. In an orchard, 15 trees bear plums, 73 trees bear apples, 29 trees bear pears, and 14 trees bear cherries; how many trees are there in the orchard ? Ans. 131 trees. 25. The hind quarters of an ox weighed 375 pounds each; the fore quarters 315 pounds each; the hide weighed 96 pounds, and the tallow 87 pounds. What was the whole weight of the ox? Ans. 1573 pounds. |
