ΤΟ LIEUTENANT GENERAL THE RIGHT HONORABLE SIR R. HUSSEY VIVIAN, Bart. G. C. B. & G. C. H. MASTER GENERAL OF THE ORDNANCE; &c. &c. &c. who has ever manifested an anxious desire THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF ARTILLERY; This Manual Is respectfully dedicated By His obliged and very obedient Servant, The Author. PREFACE. The various Publications, which are extant on subjects having reference to the professional duties of a British Artillerist, being collectively too voluminous and expensive to be attainable by the Non-Commissioned Officers of the Regiment; I have been induced to compile the present Manual, in which is condensed all the information ordinarily required in Mathematics, Gunnery, Fortification, Infantry Exercise, Field Battery Exercise, Service of Heavy Ordnance, &c. &c. &c. To render the Work both portable and moderate in cost, a considerable part of the minutia and detail of the Exercises, &c., has necessarily been omitted: in most cases, however, I trust and anticipate, it will not only prove an efficient Instructor for Non-Commissioned Officers, but also be considered useful, as an "Aide memoire," by my Brother Officers, to several of whom I am deeply indebted for their friendly advice and assistance in the compilation of it. WOOLWICH, JULY 1st, 1839. F. M. G. NOTE. The present edition of the "Artillerist's Manual," was made a free gift to the Publisher, on condition that he would retail it at so low a price as to render it available for the general use of the Royal Regiment of Artillery; and the views of the Author have been met in a most liberal manner by Mr. BODDY, who has reserved for himself barely a remunerating profit, after supplying the subscribers of the Regiment with the requisite number of Copies at a very reduced price. *. Applications for the "Artillerist's Manual," are requested to be made to J. BODDY, Artillery Place, Woolwich. |
