Of butterflies there are many kinds. How wonderful the various changes of this class of insects ! The butterflies lay their eggs ; from these hatch out worms or catterpillars which change their skins seyeral times, and finally, become aureliæ, crysales, or silkworms, out of which come the beautiful butterflies.

The wings of butterflies are, in their own substance, transparent, but owe their opacity to the beautiful dust with which they are covered. The wing of the butterfly being observed with a good microscope, will be seen to be studded over with a variety of little grains, of different forms and dimensions generally supported upon a footstalk regularly laid upon the whole surface.

Zebras inhabit the southern parts of Africa, where vast herdsof them afford an agreeable relief to the of the wearied traveller. They assemble in the day on the extensive plains of the interior of the country, and by their beauty and liveliness adorn and animate the dreary scene Such, however, is their watchfulness, that they will suffer nothing to approach them.,

All attempts to tame this animal, so as to render it serviceable to mankind, have been hitherto fruitless. Wild and independent by nature, it seems ill adapted to servitude and restraint. If, bowever, it were taken young, and much care were bestowed in its education, it might probably be in a great measure domesticated.
