§ 105. CONTRACT VERBS.

1. Verbs in άw, éw, ów, in most of their forms, follow altogether the preceding rules and examples; and reference is uniformly had to these verbs, in the chapter on the formation of the tenses. But in the present and imperfect, of the active and passive voices, when the vowels α, &, o, immediately precede the vowel of the termination, (and in the Ionic dialect partly remain there unchanged,) a contraction takes place in the Attic and common dialect.

--

2. This contraction is subject to the general laws of contraction, given above in § 27, with the exception of a few terminations in the verbs in ów. While according to the general rule, oɛɛ should be contracted into ov, and on into w, the of the second and third persons prevails in the verbs in ów, and the terminations oɛs

and ons are contracted into ois, and oɛɛ and on into oɩ, as follows,

So also 2d pers. Ind. and Subj. Pass. modón contr. prodoĩ.

Inasmuch, moreover, as oot is also contracted into or, in these persons in the active voice, the three modes, indicative, subjunctive, and optative, are alike. The infinitive in dev is regularly contracted, viz. μισθόειν, μισθοῦν.

3. Also the verbs in άo have the whole indicative and subjunctive alike in the active and passive, in the contraction made according to the general rule, whereby both as and an are contracted into a,-aɛ and an into a,-and ao, aov, aw, into w.
