power, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jefus, throughout all ages, world without end.

Amen!"

From this night till the Saturday morning before he died, the cough was very fevere, and he bad a variety of fits; fo that he was able to fpeak very little. He fpent the intervals of his trouble moftly in fecret prayer, and continued to enjoy the fmiles of heaven to the very laft. The few things he spoke with a voice fo as to be underftood, fhall very briefly be laid before the read

er.:

Looking toward the fire, he faid, "O how agreeable is the fire to one fhivering with cold! 0, much more agreeable is a fire of love to the Lord Jefus, kindled in a cold and frozen heart. My heart, was once void of the love of God, and then I loved fin and vanity; but now the love of Chrift is fhed abroad in it by the Holy Spirit, and I cannot but love him above all things. If he fhould fay to me as he did to Peter, Loveft thou me? I would return the fame anfwer, Lord, thou who knoweft all things, knowest that I love thee."

Another time looking on the fire, he faid, "O how dreadful a torment is it to be burnt in the fire! but much more dreadful must it be to be burnt with the wrath of God, in the fire that burneth for ever, and can never be quenched. Bleffed be God, that I am delivered from the wrath to come by the Lord Jefus, who fuffered the wrath of God and the pains of hell for me. O Chief among ten thousands, I love thee for this glorious inftance of thy love to one of the worst of men. O love me to the end, and increafe my love to thee."

Looking on the rays of the fun fhining into the room, he faid, "If the fhining of the natural fun be fo pleafant to every creature, O how delightful

delightful muft the rifing of the Sun of righteouf-nefs be to a poor fin-fick foul with healing in his wings! O how joyful muft the light of divine grace be to a poor blind and darkened finner! And O how comfortable muft the revelation of the perfect righteoufnefs of the adorable Redeemer be to one that fees all his own righteousness to be as filthy rags! Blefs the Lord, O my foul, that he hath made the light of grace to fhine into thy heart; that he hath healed all thy foul-illneffes, and brought his righteousness near to thee, and enabled thee to take hold of it as thy title and paffport to eternal life. The Lord will be my everlafting light, and God will be my glory. The days of mourning will foon be ended, and I fhall bid an adieu to all troubles. My Redeemer liveth, and I fhall fee him in heaven for ever."

After a racking fit of the cough, he faid, Bleffed be the most high God, that I am not in an unrenewed ftate, and made to suffer a hell here, and filled with the dreadful forebodings of one more intolerable in the world to come. How miferable is the cafe of unpardoned finners on their deathbed, who die without Chrift, and leap from the hell of fevere pains of body and agonies of mind into the fire of divine wrath and indignation! As for me, God is become my God and portion for ever; Chrift is my Saviour, and ra vishes my heart with the displays of his love; and the Spirit is my comforter, and feals me to the day of redemption. I long to be in the arms of uncreated love, and drink at the fpring-head of eternal life, in that city that has no need of the fun, neither of the moon to fhine in it, for the glory of God doth lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof."

Another time he faid, "O my dear compa- nions, continue to feek the Lord; for he never

bade any of the feed of Jacob feek his face in vain. Seek ye the Lord; for they that feek him early, shall find him. I dare fay, ye are now heartily forry, as I am, that ye did not begin to feek him as foon as reafon began to display itself in you; and that ye are now mourning for the lofs of fo much time spent in vanity, folly, and impiety. Therefore redeem the time, and improve it for the great purposes of promoting the divine glory, and fecuring your most effential interefts, the falvation of your fouls. Be diligent to make your calling and election fure. Work out your falvation with fear and trembling, for it is God that worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Proceed in your Christian courfe and warfare, till ye be crowned with victory, through him that loved you. Go on in the ftrength of the Lord God, and make mention of his righteousness, even of his only; that righteousness which God hath devifed, appointed, and approved; that righteoufnefs, which will now be the joy of your hearts, the stay of your life, and under the fhadow of which you will appear before the throne of Jefus Chrift, and in virtue of which you will be acquitted in judgment, and on the foundation of which your everlasting bleffednefs will depend. O bleffed be God for the Lord our righteousness, that glorious name which is the refuge of unrighteous finners!",

In a morning he faid, "I long to depart, and to be with Chrift; that I may be free from pain and mifery, from fin and forrow. I am tired with this world; it is grown quite infipid to me. I fee the promifed land, and long to be in poffeffion of my heavenly inheritance. There I fhall fee the living God, and behold the incarnate and triumphant Redeemer,

And in his favour find immortal light.

Te hours and days, cut short your tedious flight;
Te months and years, (if any fuch could be
Allotted in this barren world for me),
With hafty revolution roll along ;

I languifb with impatience to be gone.

"There is no place but heaven for me; and I long to be there. Mend thy pace, old lazy Time, and shake thy heavy fand; make fhorter circles, ye rolling planets; when will your de ftined courfes be fulfilled? Thou reftlefs fun, how long wilt thou travel the celestial road? when will thy ftarry walk be finished? when will the commiffioned Angel arreft thee in thy progrefs, and, lifting up his hand, (wear by the un utterable name, That time shall be no more? O happy period! my impatient foul fprings forward to falute thee, and leaves the lagging days behind. Make hafte, my Beloved, and be like a roe or a young hart on the fpicy mountains."

To the young gentleman who had addreffed him on Wednesday evening, in name of his companions, and had come to inquire for him, he faid, "O dear Sir, what you spoke formerly, refreshed my foul, and I bleffed God for the joyful news. O, cherish convictions, and the motions of the Holy Spirit, and cry inceffantly for discoveries of grace and mercy to your foul. Make fure work of religion, and fee that you build on the Rock of ages. Having begun in the Spirit, fee that you end not in the flesh. If any man draw back, fays the Lord, my foul fhall have no pleafure in him. Be not of them that draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe, to the faving of the foul. May he who fprinkleth many nations, fprinkle clean water upon you, and make you clean; and from all your filthiness and idols

máy he cleanse you. O, wath in the fountain of the glorious Redeemer's blood, and you shall be purged from all guilt and fin. Remember what I have faid, and the Lord give you understanding in all things. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on: eternal life. Look diligently, left you fail of the grace of God, and there be in you an evil. heart of unbelief, departing from the living God. Live by faith on the Son of God, and with full purpose of heart cleave to the Lord. Grace be with you."

To another of thefe gentlemen, who had come to fee..him, he faid, "O watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation. Have you begun to reform; do you now abstain from drinking to excess, or wallowing in the embraces of vile ftrumpets; do you now fear an oath ; and do you now fanctify the Lord's day, and tread in the courts of God? I rejoice at it. The Lord grant you perfeverance. May he reveal his Son in you, and caufe you indeed to believe in his name. May the God of our Lord Jefus Chrift, the Father of glory, give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Chrift. May he guide you with his counsel while here, and afterwards bring you to glory. Be holy in all manker of converfation, living to the glory of that God whom you have greatly difhonoured. Give no fleep to your eyes, nor flumber to your eyelids, till you be found in Chrift, clothed with his righteousness. Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Let your converfation be in heaven, and adorn the doctrine of God your Saviourring all things. Be fincere, and without offence till the day of Chrift; and be filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jefus Chrift unto the glory and praise of God. The good will of him that dwelt in the bush be with you."
