Ten years make a decade, and one hundred years make a century, but these terms are not used in arithmetical calculations.

The four thirty-day months may be remembered easily by the following old rhyme:

"Thirty days hath September,

April, June, and November."

February has 28 days, with 29 in leap year. The other months have 31 days.

1. Name three articles that are sold by the dozen. 2. Name three articles that are sold by the gross. 3. The term score is not used in arithmetical calculations. We should remember that it means twenty, because the word occurs often in speech and in print.

"Four-score and seven years ago" was how many years ago? Do you know who used that expression, and where and when?

4. When your school board pays 60¢ a gross for pens, how much is paid per dozen?

5. How much is received for a gross of coat hooks, when they are sold at 10¢ a dozen?

Have the above numbers copied on the blackboard. 23.48-17 Let pupils, one at a time, go to board and read (men5.90-14 tally) the sum of the figures in each number, from 73.84-22 left to right, putting results down as rapidly as possi6.95-20 ble. Keep a record of the time. Add two seconds for every mistake. The entire number should be taken in at a glance and the sum put down almost instantly. This is an excellent drill for concentration. Pupils at seats copy numbers and "check" their results by the results on the blackboard.
