Reading. The pupil should be early taught to omit the intermediate words in the addition of a column of figures. Thus, in example 18, instead of saying, 7 and 5 are 12 and 1 are 13 and 6 are 19; he should say, twelve, thirteen, nineteen; and in the column of tens, ten, nineteen, twenty-three; and similarly for the other columns. This is called, reading the columns. Let the pupils be often practiced in it, both separately, and in concert in classes. Examples. 1.
