The foregoing things fpake Jefus, and then, lifting up his eyes in a devotional manner, he said, O Father, the time of my fufferings and death draws nigh; divinely affift and support thy Son, that he may pals through the scene that is before him, in fuch manner as to reflect honor on the religion which he hath preached, and glory on his character, as a divine ambaffador.

"As thou haft given him power over all flesh that he fhould give eternal life to as many as thou haft given him."

[ocr errors]

As thou haft given a commiffion to thy Son which extends to the whole human race; that he might give eternal life to all included in that commiffion.

"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jefus Chrift whom

thou haft fent."

And this is life eternal, that all flesh, the whole human race, fhould obtain the true knowledge of the one living and true God, through Jefus Chrift, whom he hath fent for the purpose of communicat ing this knowledge.

"I have glorified thee on the earth; I have fin. ifhed the work which thou gavest me to do."

I have hitherto glorified thee, both in the matter and manner of thofe divine inftructions which I have given, and have, as a divine inftructor, finished the business which thou gavest me to do.

"And now, O Father, glorify me with thine own

felf

felf with the glory which I had with thee before the world was."

And now, O Father, I wait, only to terminate my life in the glorious cause in which I have engaged, and then, being approved of thee, in the high commiffion which I bear, to be admitted to the glory and blessedness which I enjoyed with thee before the world was made.

"I have manifefted thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gaveft them me, and they have known thy word."

I have faithfully inftructed, in the knowledge of thy name and character, the men whom thou didst felect from the world, and give me as my peculiar attendants and companions: and they have profited by the inftructions which I have given them.

"Now they have known that all things whatfoever thou haft given me are of thee."

Thefe, my difciples, have received full conviction that my commiflion, authority, and the character I have affumed, are divine.

"For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou hast sent me."

I have given fuch inftructions to my family as I received from thee; and they have given credit to them, and have been fully convinced that my miffon is divine.

"I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou haft given me; for they are thine.”

I pray now more especially for these my difciples, and not fo directly for the whole human race; for they have already become proper fubjects of thy peculiar regard..

"And all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified in them."

And indeed, I confider our intereft of honor, love, and obedience, which we receive from these my difciples, to be the fame.

"And now, I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee: Holy Father, keep through thine own name thofe whom thou haft given me, that they may be one, as we are.”

And now, that I am quickly to leave thefe in the world, I come to thee; Holy Father, preferve these my disciples in bands of unity, in fome measure, as we are united.

"While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name; thofe that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is loft, but the fon of perdition; that the fcripture might be fulfilled."

While I have been with them I have preferved them in faith, and peace, and love; and have loft none, fave one, who hath treated me as David's peculiar friend treated him; the loft fon bath eaten bread with me, and then lift up bis beel against me.

"And now come I to thee; and these things I

fpeak

speak in the world that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves."

And now I come to thee, and prefent my difciples unto thee in the arms of faith and prayer, and ask that thou woulft keep them in faith, and love, and holiness, that my joy of them may be complete.

"I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them because they are not of the world; even as I am not of the world."

I have given them divine inftruction; and the world hath been difaffected towards them, because their manners are not like those of the men of the world: even as mine are not.

"I pray not that thou shouldft take them out of the world; but that thou shouldft keep them from the evil."

I ask not that they may be taken from the world at prefent; but that thou wouldst preferve them from the follies and vices of the world; especially from infidelity.

"They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world."

They are not like the world, neither in their faith or morals; but are as really different from the men of the world as I am.

"Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth."

Let thefe, my difciples, be fanctified more and more through thy word which is truth.

"As thou haft fent me into the world, even so alfo have I fent them into the world."

[blocks in formation]

As I was fent into the world to be an inftructor and reformer of the world fo I fend them to teach and reform the world.

"And for their fakes I fanctify myself, that they also may be fanctified through the truth."

I have confecrated myself to the divine employment of teaching, leading, and directing them, that divine truth may fanctify them, and prepare them for heavenly joys and fervices.

"Neither pray I for thefe alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word."

Nor do I confine my prayer to my immediate difciples, but I pray for all who may be prevailed upor by their inftructions, to believe in me, and receive my gofpel.

"That they all may be one, as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee; that they alfo may be one in that the world may believe that thou haft fent

us;

me.

My prayer is, that all who believe in me through the preaching of the gospel by my difciples, may be united in brotherly love, in fome sense as thou, Fa→ ther, and I are united; that fo my gospel may be recommended to the world, that the world may alfo believe in me, as a divine person, sent of God.

"And the glory which thou gaveft me, I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one.” The fame kind of power and authority to teach and preach, and work miracles, which I received from thee, I have given them; that all their converts
