REV. AND DEAR SIR: THE series of sermons which you have lately delivered, on the subject of Original Sin, were heard by the people of your charge with great interest and satisfaction.

As very erroneous views upon this important subject have been promulgated, in latter times, from the pulpit and the press, and as the views of the Presbyterian Church have been much misrepresented, we are clearly of opinion that the publication of these sermons would be, at this time, peculiarly seasonable and appropriate. We trust, dear Sir, that these considerations, united with our sincere desire, will induce you to furnish a copy of them for publication.

Dear Brethren:-I herewith place at your disposal the discourses which you have requested for publication. I am induced to do this not only from deference to your wishes, but because I know of no work of a popular character to which I can refer my own people for a familiar and Scriptural exposition of the doctrine of original sin-a doctrine which, as you justly remark in your note, has been of late "much misrepresented." The theory which has been extensively substituted for it, I regard as sapping the foundations of Christianity.
