CHAPTER XLII.

An ACT to enable the Prefident of the United
States to borrow money for the public service.

Sec. I.

B

E it enacted by the Senate and Houfe of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress affembled, That the Preiident of the United States fhall be, and hereby is authorized to borrow on behalf of the Unito borrow ted States, from the bank of the United States, which is hereby authorized to lend the fame, or from any other body or bodies politic or corporate, or from any perfon or perfons, and upon fuch terms and conditions, as he shall judge moft advantageous for the United States, a fum not exceeding three millions five hundred thousand dollars, in addition to the monies to be received into the treasury of the United States from taxes, for making up any deficiency in any appropriation heretofore made by law, or to be made during the prefent feflion of Congrefs, and defraying the expenfes which may be incurred by calling into actual fervice any part of the militia of the United States, or by raifing, equipping and calling into actual fervice any regular troops or volunteers, pursuant to authorities vested, or to be vefted in the Prefident of the United States by law: Prov ded, That no engagement nor contract fhall be entered into, which fhall preclude the United States from reimburfing any fum or fums borrowed, at any time after the expiration of fifteen years from the date of fuch loan.

CHAPTER XLIII.

An ACT to continue in force "An act laying an additional duty on falt imported into the United States; and for other purposes."

E it enacted by the Senate and House of Reprefentatives of the United States of America, in Congress affembled, That an act paffed on the eighth day of July, one thousand feven hundred and ninety-feven, intituled, "An act laying an additional duty on falt imported into the United States, and for other purposes," shall be, and the fame is hereby continued in force for and during the term of ten years from the third day of March one thousand eight hundred, and from thence to the end of the next feffion of Congress thereafter, and no longer.

An ACT to authorize the allowance of a credit to William Tazewell.

E it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of Ameriea, in Congress affembled, That in fettling the accounts of William Tazewell, fecretary of Elbridge Gerry, late envoy extraordinary from the United States of America to the French Republic, the Secretary of State be, and he is hereby authorized to allow the reasonable ex

An ACT to authorize the fale and conveyance of lands, in certain cafes, by the Marshals of the United States, and to confirm former fales.
