Duties on wines.

upon thofe articles refpectively, at their importation into the United States from any foreign port or place, that is to fay; upon all brown fugar, one half cent per pound; upon all fugar candy, two cents and one half per pound; upon all molaffes, one cent per gallon; and upon all goods, wares, and merchandizes now paying a duty of ten per centum ad valorem, two and one half per centum ad valorem.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That from and after the thirtieth day of June next, the duties now imposed and payable on wines, imported into the United States from any foreign port or place, fhall ceafe and be abolished; and that in lieu thereof the following duties fhall thenceforth be laid, levied, and collected upon all wines fo imported in cafks, bottles, or other veffels, that is to fay: Upon all Malmsey, Madeira, and London particular Madeira wine, fiftyeight cents per gallon; upon all other Madeira wine, fifty cents per gallon; upon all Burgundy, Champaign, Rhenifh, and Tokay wine, fortyfive cents per gallon; upon all Sherry wine, forty cents per gallon; upon all Saint Lucar wine, forty cents per gallon; upon all claret and other wines not enumerated, when imported in bottles or cafes, thirty-five cents per gallon; upon all Lisbon, Oporto, and other Portugal wines, thirty cents per gallon; upon all Teneriffe, Fayall, Malaga, Saint George, and other Western Island wine, twenty-eight cents per gallon; and upon all other wines when imported, otherwife than in bottles or cafes, twentythree cents per gallon.

Sec. 5. CHAPTER LXVIII.

An ACT to make provifion relative to rations for
Indians, and to their vifits to the feat of go-

vernment.

Sec. I. E it enacted by the Senate and Houfe of Reprefentatives of the United States of America, in Congress affembled, That the Prefident of the United States fhall be, and hereby is authorized and empowered to caufe fuch rations as he fhall judge proper, and as can be spared from the army provifions without injury to the fervice, be iffued under fuch regulations as he shall think fit to eftablish, to Indians who may vifit the military pofts of the United States on the frontiers, or within their refpective nations.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the Prefident of the United States fhall be, and hereby is further authorized and empowered to cause to be defrayed, on the part of the United States, the reasonable expenses of such Indians as may from time to time vifit the feat of government thereof, for their journies to, stay at, and return from the fame; and alfo to caufe to be given to fuch Indians, during their stay as aforefaid, fuch prefents as he shall judge neceffary.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That a feparate account of all rations issued, and expenfes defrayed as aforefaid, and of the expenditures, occafioned by fuch prefents as are aforefaid, fhall be kept at the Department of War. THEODORE SEDGWICK,

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the PreOfficers fident of the United States fhall be, and hereby and men is authorized and empowered to discharge, on or before the fifteenth day of June next, all fuch difcharg- officers, non-commiffioned officers and privates, as have heretofore been appointed, commiffioned, or raised, under and by virtue of the said Excep- acts, or either of them, except the engineers, inspector of artillery, and inspector of fortifications. Provided always, That nothing in this act contained fhall be conftrued to authorize any reduction of the first four regiments of infantry, the two regiments of artillerifts and engineers, the two troops of light dragoons, or of the general and other staff, authorized by the feveral laws for the establishing and organizing of the aforefaid corps.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That to each officer, non-commiffioned officer, and private, who shall be discharged from service by virtue extra pay of this act, there fhall be allowed and paid, in addition to the pay and allowances to which they are now entitled by law, a fum of money equal to three months pay of such officer, noncommiffioned officer and private respectively.
