He puts a particle of the Host into the Chalice, saying:

May this mixture and consecration of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ be to us that receive it effectual to eternal life. Amen.

Then genuflecting, bowing, and striking his breast, he says: Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, * have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, * have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, give us peace.

In Masses for the Dead he says twice: Give them rest; and lastly: Give them eternal rest; and the first of the following prayers is also omitted

O Lord Jesus Christ, who saidst to Thy apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give unto you, regard not my sins, but the faith of Thy church; and grant her that peace and unity which are agreeable to Thy will; who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who, according to the will of the Father, hast by Thy death, through the co-operation of the Holy Ghost, given life to the world, deliver me by this Thy most sacred Body and Blood from all my iniquities, and from all evils; and make me always adhere to Thy commandments, and never suffer me to be separated from Thee; who livest and reignest with God the Father, &c. Amen.

Let not the participation of Thy Body, O Lord Jesus Christ, which I, though unworthy, presume to receive, turn to my judgment and condemnation; but through Thy mercy, may it be a safeguard and remedy, both to soul and body; who with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, livest and reignest, God, for ever and ever. Here he genuflects, then:

Taking the Host in his left hand, he says:

I will take the bread of heaven, and call upon the name of our Lord.

Striking his breast with humility and devotion, he says thrice:

Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldst enter under my roof; but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.

Receiving reverently both Parts of the Host, he says:

May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my soul to life everlasting. Amen.

Before taking the Chalice, he says:

What shall I render to the Lord for all the things that He hath rendered to me? I will take the Chalice of salvation, and will call upon the name of the Lord. Praising, I will call upon the Lord, and I shall be saved from my enemies.

Receiving the Chalice, he says:

May the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my soul to everlasting life. Amen.

Here the Holy Communion is administered, if there are any persons to receive. The Acolyte spreads a cloth before them, and says the Confiteor, &c.*

Then taking the first ablution, the Priest says:

Grant, O Lord, that what we have taken with our mouth, we may receive with a pure mind, that of a temporal gift it may become to us an eternal remedy.

Taking the second ablution, he says:

May Thy body, O Lord, which I have received, and Thy Blood which I have drunk, cleave unto my heart; and grant that no stain of sin may remain in me who have been fed with this pure and holy sacrament. Who livest, &c.

He then says the Communion, which seek in its proper place.

P. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

P. Let us pray.

He then reads the Post Communion, which may also be found in its proper place.

Let the performance of my homage be pleasing to Thee, O holy Trinity; and grant that the sacrifice which I, though unworthy, have offered up in the sight of Thy majesty, may be acceptable to Thee, and through Thy mercy be a propitiation for me, and for all those for whom it has been offered. Through.

*In administering Holy Communion to the people the Priest says to each one::-1. The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve thy soul unto eternal life. If the chalice is also administered-2. The Blood, etc.

Turning himself towards the people, he gives them his blessing, saying:

May Almighty God, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, bless you.

The beginning of the Gospel according to St. John.
R. Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was made nothing that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men; and the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through Him. He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light. That was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.

He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them He gave power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in His name, who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, as it were the glory of the onlybegotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

R. Thanks be to God.

After Solemn Mass, the following V. R. and Prayer are sung for the King.

P. O Lord, save Edward our King.

R. And hear us in the day when we shall call upon Thee
Glory, &c.

Let us pray.

We beseech Thee, O Almighty God, that Thy servant Edward, our King, who through Thy mercy hath undertaken the government of these realms, may also receive an increase of all virtues, wherewith being adorned he may avoid the enormity of sin, and being rendered acceptable in Thy sight, may come at length to Thee, who art the way, the truth, and the life. Through Christ, &c.

THE DIVINE PRAISES.

Blessed be His Holy Name.

Blessed be Jesus Christ, True God and True Man.

Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.

Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.

Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother.

Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints.

FORM FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION. The Holy Communion is, if possible, to be administered during the Mass, after the Communion of the Priest.

One of the Communicants or the Server shall say aloud;

I confess to Almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the saints, that I have sinned exceedingly, in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I beseech the blessed Mary ever Virgin, the blessed Michael the Archangel, the blessed John the Baptist, the holy apostles Peter and Paul, and all the saints, to pray to the Lord our God for me.

Priest (turning himself towards the communicants).

Almighty God have mercy upon you, forgive you your sins, and bring you to everlasting life.

May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon, absolution, and remission of your sins.

Communicants. Amen.

Priest (elevating the consecrated Host on the ciborium or the paten).

Behold the Lamb of God, Who taketh away the sins of the world.

O Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof, but speak the word only and my soul shall be healed (thrice).

At the administration of the Communion

The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve thy soul unto everlasting life. Amen.

If the Communion is not administered during the Mass, the Priest can afterwards add this prayer at the altar:

O SACRED banquet, in which Christ is received, the memory of his passion is brought to our remembrance, our souls are fulfilled with grace, and a pledge of eternal glory is given unto us. (During Easter-tide, Alleluia.)

Thou hast given unto us Bread from heaven. (Alleluia.)
Answer. Which containeth in itself all sweetness. (Alleluia.)
Priest. Lord, hear my prayer.

Answer.

And let my cry come unto thee.

Priest. The Lord be with you.

Answer.

Priest.

And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

O GOD, who in this wonderful Sacrament hast left us a memorial of thy passion, grant us so to venerate the sacred mysteries of thy Body and Blood, that we may ever feel within ourselves the fruit of thy redemption; who livest and reignest with the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God for ever and ever. Amen.

After the Priest has placed the ciborium in the tabernacle, he shall give
the blessing with his hand, saying,

THE Blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be upon you, and remain with you for ever. Amen.

Out of Mass, Holy Communion should be administered under the species of Bread only.

During Mass, in cases where it is desired by the Congregation, the Chalice may be administered, provided there is no risk of irreverence, or of infection. It must not be supposed that it is essential that Communicants should receive the Chalice, for our Lord is received as perfectly under either sacred species as under Moreover, the natural difficulty experienced by some in the reception of the Chalice must be respected, since such reception has never been considered essential to a valid Communion in any age of the Church.

COMMUNION OF THE SICK.

private confession of the sick person has immediately preceded, the sick person himself, or one of those present, shall say the general confession. The Communion will be administered with the same forms as in the previous service; but in the case of a sick person in imminent danger of death, the following formulary can be made use of;

BROTHER (or sister), receive the viaticum of the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, which can conduct thee to everlasting life. Amen.

VESPERS.

The Priest, vested in cope of the colour of the day, proceeds, with his attendants, to the High Altar, where he kneels, and says secretly the Our Father and the Hail Mary. Then rising and genuflecting (if the Blessed Sacrament is present), he proceeds to the Sedilia, and standing uncovered, sings:

Priest. V. O God, make speed to save me.

Choir. R. O Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father, &c.

Here follow five Psalms, an Antiphon being sung before and after each one. For this purpose the first verse of each Psalm will suffice.

During the Psalms the clergy and people are seated. At the Gloria, sung after each Psalm, the clergy uncover, and all incline the head.

Psalm cix. Dixit Dominus.

1. The Lord said unto my Lord: Sit thou on My right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

2. The Lord shall send the rod of thy power out of Sion: be thou ruler, even in the midst among thine enemies.

3. In the day of thy power shall the people offer thee free-will offerings with an holy worship: the dew of thy birth is of the womb of the morning.
