N. B. The Boston and Albany has a double track for 201 miles. The New York Central has 515 miles of double track, 231 miles of third track, and 222 miles of fourth track, and 413 miles of side-track. The Erie Railway has 306 miles of double track, and 114 miles of third track, and 337 miles of side-track. The Pennsylvania Railroad has 355 miles of double track and 357 miles of third and fourth tracks and sidings. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad has 362 miles of double track and 830 miles of third and fourth tracks and sidings.

In order to make use of this formula, it is necessary to know the fifty-eight items of expense enumerated before, all of which vary on different roads and enter into different combinations with each other. Some of the items of movement-expenses, (41 to 58,) change with the weight of trains, and have to be ascertained in each individual case. The average cost for the year can be made the basis of the estimate. Besides the items already shown, the following other items enter into the calculation: The average number of tons of freight in train per mile of the round trip of the train; the average length of the haul; the number of miles ruu over the road, with freight and passenger trains, per make a correct estimate of the cost of transportation on railroads. annum; the cost of the road; the rate of interest; and the total number of tons of freight carried during a year over one mile of road.
